Description
General Definition:
- Maintains the appearance and condition of company grounds and landscape using hand or power tools and equipment as assigned. Duties will include any combination of the following responsibilities.
Essential Job Functions:
- Performs a variety of semiskilled duties in the areas of plumbing, carpentry, electrical, painting, plastering, and lawn maintenance.
- Assists Track Foreman and other workers with their tasks.
- Cares for established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding and removing thatch, and trimming and edging around flower beds, walks, and walls and other areas as assigned.
- Duties may also include cleaning stable area bathrooms, including sanitizing areas and changing soaps and supplies.
- Mixes and sprays or spreads fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides onto grass, shrubs, and trees, using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders as assigned.
- Mows and edges lawns, using power mowers and edger’s.
- Plants seeds, bulbs, foliage, flowering plants, grass, ground covers, trees, and shrubs, and applies mulch for protection, using gardening tools as assigned.
- Hauls and/or spreads topsoil, and spread straw over seeded soil to hold soil in place.
- Prunes and trims trees, shrubs, and hedges, using shears, pruners, or similar equipment.
- Rakes, mulches, and composts leaves.
- Trims and picks flowers, and cleans flower beds.
- Duties may also include assisting in the general clean-up of the stable area.
- Operates all equipment necessary to complete job function safely and efficiently.
- Waters lawns, trees and plants using portable sprinkler systems, hoses or watering cans.
- Maintains tools and equipment using hand and power tools.
- Operates powered equipment such as mowers, tractors, twin-axle vehicles, electric clippers, sod cutters, and pruning saws.
- Uses hand tools such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, saws, hedge and weed trimmers, and axes.
- Adheres to daily work assignments, including the use of tools and equipment, as instructed by the supervisor or lead. The work schedule and breaks will be determined by the work crew assigned or as directed by the supervisor.
- Remains with the work crew assigned until further notice by the supervisor or lead.
- Drives or operates power-equipment ONLY when trained and/or certified and assigned by the supervisor. Personal vehicles are not to be used for company-related business without express permission by the Track Maintenance Director.
- Returns all tools and equipment to locked equipment room daily.
- Immediately reports problems with tools, equipment, or work assignment directly to the supervisor or lead.
- Participates in meetings, training and other company-related activities as scheduled.
- Seeks out the assistance of a supervisor to address questions and concerns.
- Assists other landscape employees within the assigned area, as needed.
- Follows all safety policies and procedures in accordance with company standards.
- Follows all company policies and procedures, including departmental policies and TX Racing Commission rules.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED; or 2 years related experience and/or training; or combination
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Job related experience required
- Ability to follow instructions
- Ability to work with insecticides, herbicides, fungicides. May also require working with cleaning and sanitizing solutions.
- Ability to interact positively with employees and the general public.
- Ability to demonstrate initiative and work with minimum supervision
- Ability to prioritize, multi task and be flexible.
- Ability to work as part of a team and work with interruptions.
- Ability to communicate with coworkers clearly. Bilingual skills helpful.
- Ability to operate all required landscaping equipment necessary to perform the job.
- Ability to work varied hours/days, including early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Ability to work outside in inclement weather as assigned.
Training:
- 2-5 year work related experience and/or training; or combination.
Licenses/Certifications/Other:
- Must be able to pass a background check and receive a license or permit from any Regulatory Agency, if applicable to perform the essential job functions
- Texas Racing Commission License (TXRC)
- Class A driver’s license with tanker endorsement and good driving record.
