Foreign Language Instructors Wanted in a Variety of Languages

Location: Washington, DC, region

A woman-owned small business headquartered in Fairfax, VA, seeks talented and experienced instructors to teach foreign languages to adult learners (government). Instructors will prepare and deliver beginner through advanced levels of foreign language instruction, aiding service members in their respective missions. Specific languages that require instruction include, but are not limited to, the following:

Afrikaans, Albanian, Arabic (MSA & all dialects) e.g. Egyptian, Levantine, Libyan, Maghrebi, Iraq, Sudanese etc.), Armenian, Azerbaijani, Baluchi, Bengali, Bulgarian, Burmese, Cambodian, Chechen, Chinese (Mandarin & Cantonese), Czech, Danish, Dari, Dutch, Estonian, Persian Farsi, Finnish, Georgian, German, Greek, Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Kazak, Korean, Kyrgyz, Kurdish, Lao, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Malay, Mongolian, Nepali, Norwegian, Pashto, Polish, Portuguese (European & Brazilian), Romanian, Russian, Serbian/Croatian, Sinhala, Slovak, Slovenian, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Tagalog, Tajik, Thai, Ukrainian, Urdu, Uzbek and Vietnamese.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Instructor duties include, but may not be limited to, the following:
  • Provide professional foreign language instruction to students in a classroom and/or virtual environment; instruction lasts up to six hours per day, with courses up to 64 weeks, depending on the language category
  • Prepare and adapt language lessons to individual students’ learning needs
  • Prepare lessons based on proficiency-oriented principles of second language acquisition with a strong focus on instructional methods that are the most effective for adult learners
  • Ensure instruction is culturally based and learner-centered, employing authentic materials and practical exercises that resemble what students may do with their language skills in their final job assignments; emphasis placed on communicative competence in real-life situations and practical application of language skills to include appropriate military terminology and exposure to both formal and informal language, including colloquial and idiomatic speech
  • Prepare and deliver materials and activities that generate as much uninhibited, spontaneous use of the language as possible
  • Develop speaking, listening, reading, and (as an ancillary ability) writing skills required to interact effectively with foreign nationals and members of the diplomatic community to conduct the USG’s business abroad
  • Teach writing skills that promote/enable language acquisition, leading to increased proficiency in the target language instructed
  • Devote specific attention to acquiring skills associated with non-participatory listening and general reading comprehension to permit level-appropriate attainment of the end-of-course proficiency objectives
  • Provide engaging training that encourages higher order thinking skills (analyze, evaluate, create) and that develops independent learning skills and adheres to the best practices in and principles of adult education
  • MUST incorporate the use of diverse instructional technologies such as, but not limited to, electronic flash cards, online learning applications (apps), games, virtual and augmented reality, social collaboration tools in the LMS, a Human Language Technology tools (HLT) and Gen AI
  • MUST integrate intercultural competence and cultural knowledge into language instruction in all phases of training

INSTRUCTOR QUALIFICATIONS:

Location: DC - National Capital Region

Minimum qualifications include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Native speaker of target foreign language and near-native English speaking/reading/writing and listening skills:
  • Possess Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) scores of Level 3 or above on the ILR scale or Superior or above on the ACTFL scale in the Target Language
  • Proven proficiency in English by providing an Oral Proficiency Interview score of Level 2 or above on the ILR scale or Advanced or above on the ACTFL scale
2. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with at least two years of successful relevant experience in intensive training, teaching adults using proficiency-oriented methods and developing materials aimed at ILR skill levels 2 and 3.

3. Demonstrated experience successfully using educational technology tools to enhance student learning is preferred (Learning Management Systems, including virtual platforms like Webex, MS Teams, Zoom, Adobe Connect, etc.).

4. Experience teaching remotely is a plus.

5. Must possess the ability to adapt instruction and/or curricula to students with varying learning styles requiring different teaching strategies.

6. Experience developing tests and assessments to gauge students’ language proficiency relevant to course goals and objectives.

Additional Qualifications:

In addition to the requirements detailed above, instructors must possess excellent word processing skills (e.g., MS Word, PowerPoint, etc.) and be adept at using instructional technology both in-person (classroom) and for virtual instruction.

Clearance: No clearance is necessary, but must be able to pass a background check
