Global Support and Development is seeking to welcome a Crew Support Manager to the People and Culture section within the Human Resources' department.  This is a full-time role based at HQ in Charlotte, N.C., with frequent travel to GSD's humanitarian vessel located within the Caribbean region.



GSD's Crew Support Manager (CSM) is a vital shoreside role responsible for the comprehensive support to our Humanitarian Vessel (HV) and our maritime crew. They serve as the primary point of contact for the ship’s Captains and Heads of Department as well as senior GSD’s maritime staff for matters supporting the ship’s operational effectiveness. 



The CSM will partner with external agencies to support contracts, fulfill all employment activities, and ensure adherence to all relevant regulations. They will also reinforce operational effectiveness by supporting training and crew development.



This role requires strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, as well as a deep understanding of maritime operations and crew needs. The CSM will also serve as a key member of the GSD People and Culture function by delivering expert level maritime and people strategies.

  • Develop, implement, and execute plans, processes, and projects in support of departmental strategy, maximizing efficient use of resources and ensuring shared vision;
  • Support critical decision-making processes, to include identifying issues and driving problem-solving, especially in resource-constrained and time-sensitive contexts;
  • Drive crewing budgetary planning, control, and analysis as it relates to compensation, benefits and headcount needs for crew staff;
  • In support of an equitable one GSD approach, collaborate with the Director of Human Resources on the design of policies and initiatives that will support vessel operations as well as larger organizational operations;
  • Serve as the primary interface with external organizations regarding personnel crew management; including: 
    • Provide guidance to the HV Captains to inform actions onboard and with planning long-term crewing strategies;
    • Provide support to the Pursers on all crew personnel related matters.  This includes VISAs, travel arrangements, compliance certifications and other crew administration;
    • Support crew compensation reviews and bonus considerations while maintaining parity within the GSD team structure; 
    • Lead full-cycle recruitment initiatives for crew-related talent needs;
    • Broaden the maritime recruiting base and define effective recruiting strategies to sustain GSD’s operational growth;
  • In partnership with Training and Development, facilitate crew operational training requirements and delivery;
  • Support GSD Human Resources matters including, but not limited to, employee relations, performance reviews and reporting, and HR policy development;
  • Facilitate closer integration of internal communication with GSD and vessel-related staff;
  • In collaboration with external contracting agencies and GSD Director of Wellness and Employee Experience, develop and implement culture-based initiative onboard DAWN;
  • Serve as additional HR support staff for GSD HR, picking up “additional duties as assigned” from the DHR and the HR Manager;
  • Prompt and action GSD’s core values of accountability, humility, and integrity in all work we conduct;
  • Promote good stewardship of financial and other resources to achieve maximum benefit to those impacted by disaster or at risk of impact; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications


Required Experience:

  • Two (2) or more years of relevant management experience in maritime crew management, logistics or a related maritime field; 
  • Five (5) or more years experience in operations or human resources, preferably in an international or maritime context; 
  • Strong understanding of maritime operations, regulations (STCW, MLC, ILO, ISM code etc.), and crew needs; and
  • Proven experience developing programs and teams.


Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Maritime Administration, Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field preferred; or 
  • Equivalent experience and training.


Professional Licenses/Certifications:

  • Certification in project management is desired.


Knowledge/Skills:

  • Proven ability to lead and motivate teams to produce quality results within challenging timeframes and ongoing change;
  • Program oversight and management, development of programmatic policy, procedure, and guidelines;
  • Proven people skills to include conflict resolution, counseling, mediation and motivational skills;
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously under pressure;
  • Confident and effective written and verbal communication, to include presentation ability;
  • Cultural awareness and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide array of stakeholders to build relationships;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite and crew management software;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment;
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills;  
  • High-level skills in diplomatic engagement or similar;
  • Discernment for confidentiality in relation to organizational, partner, and donor activities and communications;
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to rapidly shift tasks;
  • Experience working and/or traveling domestically and internationally; and
  • Working knowledge of Spanish and/or French desired. 


WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Working Conditions (HQ) 


Work is performed in an office setting and is generally sedentary, but may involve movement (e.g., walking, standing or otherwise being mobile throughout the office) for brief periods of time;

  • Ability to use hands, reach, and independently lift and move items weighing up to 20 pounds, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects;
  • Ability to bend and stoop;
  • Ability to sit and view a computer screen for extended periods of time;
  • Ability to demonstrate manual dexterity to operate computer and other office equipment;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.


Working Conditions (Vessel)

  • May be regularly exposed to and required to work in varying outdoor weather conditions, including extreme heat or cold, heavy rainfall, and other extreme weather events; 
  • May be required to engage in irregular travel and / or work schedules, which may include extended hours exceeding 8 or 12 hours in a day;
  • While wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) which is required and provided by GSD: 
    • Work may be conducted near moving mechanical parts, which could include exposure to loud noises;
    • Work may be conducted near and include potential exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals; or 
    • Work may be conducted in areas that include exposure to the risk of electrical shock or vibration.
  • Ability to obtain necessary travel documents and fulfill any other travel requirements (including an active passport, visa requirements, vaccinations, etc.);
  • This role may include deployments to support natural disaster response efforts within hazardous environments (economically/environmentally) in pre- and post- disaster scenarios, which could include, among other conditions: lack of access to medical care, exposure to critical incidents (including severe injury, death, traumatic encounters, and/or mental strain), and uncommon sleeping arrangements (i.e. not in a hotel, could include close living quarters and cohabitation);  
  • GSD’s nutritional environment contains milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat products. Ability to make dietary accommodations may be limited. Potential exposure to food borne allergens; and
  • Employees may be required for this role to work upon our humanitarian vessel for up to 30 consecutive days. The vessel’s working environment entails performing in conditions inherent to vessel travel, including but not limited to: steep and narrow stairs and living spaces, close quarters including cohabitation, sharp surfaces, metal gangways and ladders, heavy doors, European-type plugs and wiring (220-240v, 60Hz) which cannot support all American appliances, in addition to bright and flashing lights, loud noises, nuts and shellfish exposure, poor weather, movements which can trigger motion sickness, and / or limited access to hospital / definitive care. This setting involves various sea conditions, including but not limited to rough seas, adverse weather, and potential for sea sickness.


Physical Demands 

  • Ability to perform work indoors in an office environment;
  • Ability to work a varied schedule to complete projects and meet deadlines in response to changing demands;
  • Ability to travel to attend meetings, industry or professional association conferences and stay overnight as required.
