Job Description

Summary :

Responsible for ensuring the safety and security of students, staff, and school facilities. Key duties include supervising students, enforcing behavior standards, monitoring facilities, responding to incidents, and assisting with emergency procedures. This is an armed position requiring prior law enforcement or military experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

Campus Safety and Supervision :

Patrol school buildings, campus grounds, and parking areas on foot and in a vehicle to monitor and deter unsafe or illegal activities.
Observe and assess individuals and activities on campus, including monitoring security systems (e.g., cameras, alarms).
Respond to inquiries, direct visitors, and verify proper identification and passes.
Maintain visibility in hallways, common areas, parking lots, and other gathering spaces to promote safety.
Intervene in conflicts, enforce school rules (e.g., dress code, traffic policies), and manage prohibited items (e.g., weapons, tobacco, illegal substances).
Validate that exterior doors remain secure throughout the day.
Supervise students during lunch periods and other times as needed.
Document and report credible incidents.

Incident Response :

Address disturbances, unauthorized visitors, or criminal activity, exercising judgment to assess risks and call for assistance.

Escort students or unauthorized individuals as needed.

Assist in emergency drills (e.g., fire, tornado, lockdown) and respond to crises following established procedures.

Investigate incidents involving students, such as fights, theft, or substance abuse.

Student Conduct and Discipline :

Enforce the Student Conduct and Discipline Code and related school policies.

Administer warnings and refer serious issues to school administrators.

Mentor and counsel at-risk students to encourage appropriate behavior.

Supervise detention and in-school suspension when necessary.

Visitor and Access Management :

Verify and manage visitor access, ensuring compliance with identification requirements.

Monitor parking areas, issue permits, and enforce parking regulations.

Collaboration with Law Enforcement :

Support School Resource Officers (SROs) and law enforcement personnel during investigations or crises.

Assist with searches for prohibited items and monitor security systems as needed.

Event Security :

Provide security at after-hours school events and extracurricular activities, including evenings and weekends.

Participate in mandatory pre-scheduled events and occasional overtime opportunities.

Record Keeping and Reporting :

Maintain accurate electronic records of disciplinary actions, security incidents, and parking enforcement.

Training and Professional Development :

Attend ongoing safety and security training, including firearms qualifications.

Maintain First Aid and CPR certifications within 90 days of hire.

Other Responsibilities :

Assist staff and students during crisis situations.

Perform additional duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, and Certifications :

Required :

High school diploma or equivalent.

Minimum of 4 years prior experience in law enforcement or military service (required; security experience cannot substitute).

Current CCW and Valid P.O.S.T. certification or willingness to obtain P.O.S.T. certification.

Valid driver's license with acceptable motor vehicle record.

Must provide a personal firearm.

Successful completion of a background check.

Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.

Preferred :

1-2 years of experience working with elementary or middle school students.

Skills, Knowledge, Equipment, and Other Requirements

Skills and Knowledge :

Strong oral and written communication skills.

Proficiency in the English language.

Interpersonal skills, conflict management, and behavior management expertise.

Basic computer literacy and familiarity with office productivity software.

Equipment Knowledge :

Proficiency with two-way radios is required within two weeks of hire.

Basic familiarity with student information system software may be required within two weeks of hire.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

First Aid and CPR certifications are preferred.

Supervision and Responsibility

No direct supervisory duties.

Responsible for supervising and managing student behavior both inside and outside school buildings.

Safety Considerations

Risks to Self :

Medium exposure to bruises, cuts, and potential contact with bodily fluids when breaking up fights.

Low risk of more serious injuries, such as fractured bones, hernias, or other physical harm.

Risks to Others :

Failure to monitor and defuse hostile situations, follow school policies, or handle bodily fluids appropriately could expose others to harm or injuries.

Physical Demands

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 100 pounds.

Ability to stand, walk, climb stairs, kneel, crouch, and crawl.

Ability to work in varying weather conditions and walk long distances.

Visual acuity including close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.

Work Environment

Frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions.

Noise levels range from moderate to loud.

Safety Considerations :

Potential for minor injuries (e.g., cuts, bruises) when addressing conflicts.

Adherence to safety protocols to minimize risk to self and others.

Mental Functions

Regularly required to communicate, instruct, negotiate, and use interpersonal skills.

Frequently required to analyze, evaluate, and resolve issues.

Supervisory Responsibilities :

No direct supervisory duties; responsible for managing and supervising student behavior.
