Responsibilities
- Maneuvering locomotives within the switching yard to assemble and disassemble trains
- Moving railcars to designated tracks as per schedule and instructions
- Operating track switches to route trains or individual railcars onto different tracks
- Ensuring that tracks are correctly aligned for the intended movement
- Connecting and disconnecting railcars using mechanical couplings
- Inspecting couplings and ensuring secure connections
- Conducting pre-operational inspections of locomotives and railcars to identify any mechanical issues
- Reporting and addressing any defects or maintenance needs
- Using radios and hand signals to convey information accurately and efficiently
- Adhering to all safety protocols and regulations to prevent accidents and injuries
- Wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Quickly addressing and resolving operational issues that arise during shifts
- Making informed decisions to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the yard
- Documenting all movements, switch positions, and any incidents that occur during operations
- Keeping logs of inspections and maintenance activities
- Ensuring compliance with environmental and safety regulations
- Participating in ongoing training programs to stay updated on operational procedures and safety standards
- Assisting in the training of new personnel as needed

- Must hold a valid state issued Driver's License
- FRA/AAR locomotive operator certification Preferred
- Comfortable working at heights for various installs
- Working at heights - elevated locomotive platforms & autotracks
- Operating heavy machinery - diesel locomotives
- Precise manual dexterity - locomotive controls
- Exposure to change in temperature - work is primarily outside
- Exposure to dust, fumes, gases, chemicals, etc - Diesel exhaust from locomotives
- Drive
