What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Teacher Infant Room position at Glow Children Early Learning Center?
GLOW is seeking a mission-driven early learning teacher committed to assisting in an infant classroom with empathy, curiosity, energy, kindness, creativity and structure. The spots in this classroom will be a combination of the children of Lumen High School students and staff. There may be a few children from families in the Spokane community. The work schedule will be based on the Lumen High School schedule and will likely be closed on certain school holidays. This position is a 10-month position, though there will be an opportunity to work under another contract for GLOW in the summer months.
The philosophy of GLOW is a whole-child, play-based approach that has social-emotional-relational learning embedded into every layer. Teachers will not only have the ability to make deep, committed relationships with the children but will also be able to make those connections with the student-parents of GLOW. Student-parents will be involved daily in the care of their child/ren in the classroom through an elective course at Lumen, which will be monitored in part by GLOW staff.
GLOW staff will have time in their schedule to receive training hours that go above and beyond the hours required by DCYF as well as have weekly professional development with the Lumen High School staff. Additionally, GLOW staff will work with community partners who will provide services to the children at the center, such as speech and occupational therapeutic services.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Academic:
Assist the lead teacher in implementing curriculum and supplemental resources to create learning opportunities that show sensitive awareness of trauma and cultural differences
Assume lead teacher responsibilities when the lead teacher is absent
Bring creativity to the learning environment using sensory, musical and artistic modes in individual, small group and large group activities
Model the culture of growth mindset and continuous learning
Display knowledge of child development, teaching strategies and appropriate activities for the age group
Have the ability to stick to deadlines and complete paperwork in a timely manner
Assist in overseeing and maintaining classroom management and safety
Follow all GLOW policies and procedures
Adhere to the Washington Administrative Code (WAC) and related policies concerning childcare with team support
Maintains appropriate work habits, including regular and punctual attendance and appropriate use of conference and planning time
Work cohesively with all community partners who form the child’s academic experience
Social Emotional/Relational:
Ability and willingness to learn about attachment research and apply the tenants of security to interactions with the children, the student-parents and co-workers
Create a culture where every child feels a consistent sense of belonging, self-advocacy and self-efficacy
Prioritize relational work with play-based academic work
Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with other staff members
Advocacy:
Relentless advocacy for every child and their student-parent
Communicate the positive aspects of the program to the public in work and deed
Work cooperatively with parents to strengthen the educational program for their children
Professional Development:
Attend all paid training opportunities with a willingness to learn and implement the material offered
Develop strong working relationships with the Lumen High School staff
Be willing to continue your own growth mindset
Participate warmly in the student-parent elective course experience
QUALIFICATIONS
A desire to work with children, age 1 - 3, with complex needs, including - but not limited to - experiencing poverty and/or trauma
A desire to work with the children’s teenaged parents, Lumen High School staff and community partners
Excellent organization, time management and problem-solving skills
Excellent interpersonal skills and a desire to learn about and apply attachment research systems
Excellent cultural awareness and sensitivity
Knowledge of trauma and its impact on development, growth and behaviors in children
Ability to work independently and as a team member
Must be able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
Basic computer skills, including e-mail and word processing
Proof of MMR vaccine and TB test
Criminal history/child abuse information check including Washington State Department of Early Learning
Portable Background Check prior to employment through MERIT (by DCYF)
Completion of Child Care Basics training
CPR/First Aid certification
Blood Borne Pathogens training
Valid Washington Food Handlers card
Safe Sleep training
Other training as assigned
OTHER INFORMATION
Assistant Teachers will be paid an hourly wage based on experience. This position is a full time position between the hours of 7am - 5:30pm. Actual work hours within this timeframe will be determined with the job offer.
There may be opportunities for stipends for additional work in the areas of expanded professional development and advocacy work.
This position is probationary for the first three months and may be extended an additional three months.
