Position Title: Optical Field Technician
Entity: Glow Networks, Inc.
Classification: Non-Exempt
Location: Lafayette, LA Metro Area
Pay: $30 - $32 p/h, W2, no benefits
Reports To: Project Manager
Working Hours: Day and night shift, may also work maintenance windows

Summary: The Optical Field Technician will perform installation and repair activities on OEM devices and equipment from ADTRAN, Cisco, ALU, (Nokia,) and associated ancillary systems. Will also install and maintain network equipment, communications cabling, fiber, power and ground systems. Work will be performed in Telephone Central Offices and Data Centers. All work will be documented, and technicians will strictly adhere to safety standards. This role is well suited for a Field Technician with 5 years of Central Office, router, switch, and optical network equipment installation and maintenance experience.

Essential Functions:
  • Pick up materials from the warehouse in Lafayette, LA, and verify what is required for the various maintenance and installation activities
  • Travel to customer sites as needed to install and commission optical network equipment, routers and switches such as RAD 203, RAD 205, Ciena OME 6500, Cisco NCS 540’s in telephone Central Office or Data Center
  • Perform physical installation including site survey, "rack and stack", cabling, fiber, power and ground.
  • Commission newly installed equipment, verify power-up, and support on-site integration, as needed by customer
  • Run new fiber and cabling as needed; use existing cable plant when appropriate.
  • Perform network fault isolation, BERT tests, link fiber characterization, as needed.
  • Install RJ45/RJ48 cables, connectors, optical fibers, perform port testing, labeling and dress all wiring.
  • Install PDUs to equipment rack; run power to rack; work with AC and DC power and connect to station ground as needed.
  • Document work is performed according to customer standard requirements.

Other Functions:
  • Complete all required tests needed to gain access to customer Central Office
  • Read and understand Scope of Work (SOW) and Memorandum of Procedure (MOP)
  • Complete all technical reading and study requirements to earn CO access.
  • Must be familiar with and be able to comply with standard Central Office protocols.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:
  • Work will be performed in a Telephone Central Office or Data Center with cold air conditioning and a moderate background noise environment.
  • Must have own standard tools, per tool list; company will provide specialized tools.
  • Extensive use of hand tools, wire cutters, pliers, screwdrivers, and specialized wiring tools; electronic tablet to track work tasks; some power tools may also be used.
  • Adhere to all safety standards around low voltage and high voltage electric power.
  • Must be based in the Lafayette, LA area

Required Education/Experience and Competencies:
  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Must be proficient with optical and digital network, installation, commissioning, and integration.
  • A valid driver's license and good driving record are required.
  • Expert installation skills with low-voltage electric and light gauge wiring used for signaling.
  • Proficient with hand tools such as pliers, wire cutters, wire strippers, screwdrivers, etc.
  • Familiar with C/O entry, safety and work procedures, switch layout, power, ground, and ancillary equipment operation, troubleshooting and problem resolution.
  • Familiar with Service Provider routers from Cisco (CSRx, ASRx, 7600, etc.) and/or Nokia (ALU 7750, 7705, etc.) or, other OEM, is helpful.
  • Familiar with Service Provider Optical Network equipment from ADTRAN, Cisco, Ciena, etc.
  • Familiar with optical networking equipment such as EDFA and DACS
  • Familiar with power tools such as battery-operated drills and electric soldering irons
  • High physical flexibility, including bending, stooping, laying down, and climbing ladders to reach cross connects.
  • Familiar with provisioning orders, wiring and troubleshooting process and procedures.
  • Higher level English language comm skills; must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with other team members who may have limited English language proficiency.
  • Ability to train CO Tech 1 on MOP and SOW procedures.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and work as a contributing team player.
  • Able to work daytime shifts and nighttime maintenance windows, as required.
