POSITION SUMMARY:
Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
GENERAL FUNCTIONS:
Under the direction of the Aquatics Director or Coordinator, the lifeguard maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Hire, train, supervise and schedule assigned staff.
- Ensure staff training and training records are in compliance with the aquatics safety plans and county and state regulations.
- Conduct monthly staff in-services and trainings in conjunction with regulatory requirements and branch needs.
- Ensure appropriate lifeguard staffing and coverage for all pool activities, within budgetary guidelines.
- Maintain pool logs and schedules. Work with the aquatic director to develop program and class offerings.
- Acts as the key staff person to communicate with members and guests regarding pool activities and offerings.
- Work with the branch and facilities staff to ensure the pool areas meet YMCA, NYS and county health department rules and regulations.
- Ensure pool supplies and equipment are adequate and safe.
- Act as the lifeguard on duty as required.
- Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
- Maintains effective relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- A combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma plus at least two years of lifeguarding experience.
- One year of aquatics supervision and/or staff coordination experience.
- Effective verbal and writing communication skills.
- Demonstrated abilities to motivate, train and manage employees.
- Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
- Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to pass lifeguard test.
- Must be able to remain alert.
- Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
- Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
- Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
- Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
CERTIFICATIONS:
- Successfully complete the YMCA New Employee Orientation and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of employment.
- Current YMCA Lifeguarding or Red Cross or Ellis & Associates Lifeguarding Certification.
