Summary:
The purpose of this classification is to conduct or coordinate Fire Prevention and/or Fire Inspection activities, which may involve performing field inspections for building code compliance, field inspections for new construction projects, fire investigations, fire prevention education, construction/site plan review, on-site inspections, assure compliance with fire and life-safety codes, investigation of fire code violations.
Essential Job Functions: The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Ensures compliance with fire codes, life/safety codes, NFPA codes, SBCCI codes, Fire Protection Handbook, and all other applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
- Consults with commanding officers, other public safety agencies, and other officials to review operations/activities, review/resolve problems, receive advice/direction, and provide recommendations.
- Conducts fire inspections; maintains files on state/local inspections; conducts new business inspections and alcohol license inspections; conducts annual scheduled inspections of schools and businesses.
- Reviews construction plans and site plans buildings for conformance with applicable codes; reviews preliminary site plans and final site plans for proper placement of hydrants, size of water mains, road width and access to structures, handicap parking spaces, emergency exit routes, building capacity, fire protection, emergency lighting, emergency exit signs, door swings, and other factors.
- Conducts site inspections during construction to ensure compliance with fire codes; inspects new construction for factors such as ADA compliance, location/aim of emergency lighting, proper installation of fire alarm systems, proper installation of hood systems and hood extinguishing systems, emergency exit door access, proper labeling of an electrical panel, placement and quantity of fire extinguishers, location of exit signs, and installation and proper operation of sprinkler systems.
- Serves as Investigation Team Commander; maintains case files; monitors changes in applicable laws and investigation procedures; coordinates team training activities; oversees operations of the Fire Investigation Team, including activities involving scene processing, photography and drawings, evidence collection and preservation, and interviewing of witnesses, owners, occupants, and suspects; gives depositions and testifies in court; represents the department with insurance companies and private investigators.
- Investigates complaints on fire safety violations; conducts follow-up investigations to ensure problem resolution.
- Provides fire prevention instruction; develops and writes lesson plans; teaches fire prevention training classes for fire department and community organizations.
- Reviews departmental fire incident reports for accuracy and proper completion; compiles data on types of calls.
- Responds to fire, EMS, aircraft, and severe weather emergencies as needed, including emergency calls for fire suppression, medical assistance, hazardous materials incidents, motor vehicle accidents, natural disasters, explosions, bomb threats, rescue operations, downed power lines, and other emergency situations.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Must be 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED, and possess and maintain a valid drivers license with appropriate endorsement. Must possess and maintain valid Georgia Fire Inspector I certification or ability to obtain within the first year of employment. Must possess and maintain valid Georgia Public Fire & Life Safety Educator I certification or ability to obtain within the first year of employment. Must possess and maintain valid Georgia Fire Service Plans Examiner or ability to obtain within the first year of employment.
