What it's like to be a Plant Operator at Plant Operator
As the Plant Operator at Golden Valley Electric Association in Healy, you will take on the critical role of "chief responsible operator of the shift." Your primary focus will be the safe and environmentally compliant operation of the plant, ensuring adherence to approved operating procedures and dispatch instructions. You will lead your shift crew, ensuring all tasks are completed efficiently while achieving objectives related to heat rate, availability, and output capacity. Your leadership will shine through as you provide immediate responses to plant emergencies and abnormal transients, coordinating with maintenance for seamless operations. Serving as the senior GVEA representative on-site when management is unavailable, you'll enforce policies and procedures while mentoring and training Plant Technicians on plant systems.
Your proactive guidance will be instrumental in promoting GVEA's goals and achieving cost and performance targets, making this a highly impactful and rewarding position.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are:
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Confined space respirator and fire brigade training preferred or the ability to become proficient in these areas within 30 days of hire.
- Three years' experience as a Plant Technician or equivalent.
- Two years' experience operating heavy equipment such as loader dozer backhoe etc.
- Five to eight years of directly related experience with at least two years' experience in a supervisory role.
- Demonstrated experience using personal computers and databases.
- Demonstrated experience in boiler steam turbine start-up operation and shutdown including water pre-treatment systems, wastewater treatment systems, compressed air equipment, circulation water systems, fire protection equipment, chemical feed systems, flue gas treatment systems and emissions monitoring systems.
Proficiency in using personal computers and databases is necessary to manage operational data effectively. Additionally, candidates should have experience in boiler steam turbine start-up, operation, and shutdown, as well as familiarity with various systems including water pre-treatment, wastewater treatment, fire protection, chemical feed, and emissions monitoring. Confined space, respirator, and fire brigade training, or the ability to acquire these skills quickly, is preferred, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of safety protocols in the workplace.
