Job Description:
Prepares and maintains medical equipment for surgical procedures. Before a surgery, the Operating Room Technician (ORT) helps prepare the operating room (OR) by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions. The ORT follows regulations and industry procedures for the OR, assembles both sterile and non-sterile equipment and ensure the equipment functions properly. Other duties include passing instruments, holding retractures, cutting sutures, helping count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments, and operating sterilizers, lights, or suction machines. After surgery is complete, the ORT helps transfer patients from the OR table and clean and restock the operating room and supply room. As an operation room team member the ORT/Surgical Technician performs a variety of duties to prepare the Operating Room and the patient for surgery, using appropriate techniques.
Responsibilities:
Professional accountability: Attends pertinent education/training programs as needed. Maintains CPR certification, Nursing Process: Monitors skin integrity and communicates to circulating RN, Technical skills: Maintains technical skill level and adapts to changes in surgical technique and operative interventions, Communication: Updates and revises preference cards as needed. Communicates changes/needs to inventory, Critical thinking: Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy related to procedure, Organizational skills: Collaborates with RN to ensure that all necessary equipment and supplies are in the room prior to the start of a case, Leadership: Acts as preceptor for new staff or students. Demonstrates a constructive approach during all interactions with staff.
Education/Credentials:
HS diploma or equivalent
one year of hospital experience required
BLS certification within 30 days of hire
CST or CRCST certification desired
On-call responsibilities--must be able to be at the hospital within 30 minutes or less.
Good communication and teamwork skills.
Good physical and emotional health to work under stress and emergent situations.
Must be able to understand and apply principals of aseptic technique.
Must be able to apply principles of good posture and body mechanics.
Starting Range: $23.34-29.18
