What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bilingual Paraprofessional, 3.5 hours daily Ranchos Middle School position at Golden Valley Unified School District?
DEFINITION: Under the direction of the site administrator and the classroom teacher, provides instructional assistance to individual or small groups of limited or non-English speaking students and translates for parents and teachers as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Works with individual or small groups of limited or non-English speaking students;
•Provides instructional support in the core curriculum areas to assigned limited or non-English proficient students as in English acquisition
•Assists teachers in making telephone calls and home visits to limited or non-English speaking parents to translate and interpret a variety of information
•Listens and reinforces instructions given by the teacher in reading, spelling, math, and other subjects;
•Provides a social/cultural link for students and staff and builds a supportive relationship;
•Assists the teacher with the state assessment of ELLs;
•Develops realia and other teaching aids to support the acquistion of English with teacher direction;
•Exercises constant supervision of the students;
•Uses positive reinforcement;
•Talks often with the teacher about the progress of students regarding student performance and levels of English proficiency;
•Collects data for portfolios and other measurements of progress as deemed appropriate by the supervising teacher;
•Assists ELL students by providing proper examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude, and general guidance;
•Participates in meetings and staff development programs – especially those related to bilingual education, as assigned;
•Assists in home-school communication by translating short memos or flyers and by serving as an interpreter to ELL parents;
•Works with the school site ELAC Committee and the district DLAC Committee;
•Assures the health and safety of students by following health and safety rules;
•Performs a variety of clerical duties, such as preparing instructional materials, scoring papers, maintaining student records and files, and typing classroom materials;
•Assists in maintaining a clean and orderly learning environment; and
•Performs related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge and skills of:
•Child guidance principles and practices as they relate to students with learning disabilities
•Core subjects taught in district schools
•Safe practices in classroom and playground activities
•Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary and a designated second language
•Basic record-keeping techniques
•Classroom procedures and conduct
Ability to:
•Assist ELLs with the instructional program and related activities of the assigned learning environment
•Read, write, and translate English and a designated second language
•Present a positive image of Golden Valley Unified School District,
•Print and write legibly in English and the primary language
•Understand and follow written or oral directions
•Demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward students with special needs
•Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, and the public including members of ethnic communities and foreign countries
•Communicate effectively both orally and in writing in English and the primary language
Education and Experience:
Graduation from high school; forty-eight units of college work or passing of exam for NCLB compliance; with a preference of one year of experience in working with school age children in an organized setting
Licenses and Certificates:
Valid California Class C Driver’s license.
