Lighting Designer II: The LD-II designation applies to people with approximately 3-6 years of experience in architectural lighting design. The LD-II has progressed to ideating design concepts including conceptualizing lighting schemes, developing technical drawings and details, collaborating with other design teams outside the firm, and ensuring successful implementation of lighting solutions across different project types. The LD-II demonstrates a strong understanding of lighting principles and technical capabilities and has joined one or more professional organizations such as IES, IALD, or DLF, and is actively pursuing the LC (Lighting Certified by the NCQLP) or CLD (Certified Lighting Designer by the IALD) designation. The job requires a bachelor’s or higher degree in lighting design, architecture, architectural engineering, interior design, or industrial design.
The LD-II must be able to perform the following functions:
All functions of an LD-I including the following:
- Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook or equivalent
- Revit, CAD, AGi32, and BlueBeam
- Adobe Creative Suite, COMcheck
Design – Working with senior lighting design staff the LD-I can
- Write lighting fixture schedules in CAD or Excel
- Prepare lighting layouts in CAD or Revit
- Prepare COMcheck reports
- Prepare lighting calculations in AGi32
- Compute lighting power density in Excel
- Attend site visits with Senior staff and write site visit report structure
- Create light fixture cuts packages in BlueBeam
- Obtain pricing information from sales rep network
- Work on changes to existing designs in progress
Design – Working with senior staff and project managers the LD-II will
- Create lighting concept visual presentations in Adobe InDesign
- Attend meetings with the full design team to actively participate in the design of lighting for the designated project
- Write Basis of Design (BOD) and lighting control narratives
- Design lighting controls
- Facilitate mockups onsite or in the office to confirm lighting concepts
- Procure equipment samples for review
- Learn appropriate building and energy codes applicable to lighting
- Attend site visits and write site visit reports
- Review submittal packages
- Answer RFIs
- Facilitate the project during all stages from beginning to end
Education
- The LD-II employee will take one factory trip per year.
- Attend LEDucation and NYControlled with senior staff
- Attend sales agency trade shows with senior staff
- Attend educational sessions at a lighting event
- Attend a minimum of 2 manufacturer events per year
- Upon certification as an LC or CLD, the LD-II will actively maintain CEU credits required to keep the certification
