A non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) driver is responsible for safely transporting individuals who do not require emergency medical care but need assistance getting to medical appointments, treatments, or other necessary locations. Here are some key duties and responsibilities of a non-emergency transportation driver:
- Safe Driving: The driver must operate the vehicle in a safe, courteous, and responsible manner, following all traffic laws and regulations. This includes adhering to speed limits, avoiding distractions, and using defensive driving techniques.
- Assistance with Boarding and Exiting: The driver may assist passengers who have mobility issues, such as helping them get in and out of the vehicle or ensuring they are comfortably seated and secured. Must be willing to assist Wheelchair Passengers.
- Ensuring Comfort and Safety: The driver ensures that passengers are comfortable during the ride by maintaining a clean, well-maintained vehicle, adjusting the climate control as needed, and providing support if required.
- Monitoring and Managing Schedules: The driver needs to manage pick-up and drop-off schedules, ensuring timely arrivals at destinations, and handling any delays or changes to the schedule efficiently.
- Passenger Communication: Effective communication with passengers is crucial. The driver may need to explain the transportation process, answer questions, and ensure passengers understand where they are going and when they will arrive.
- Vehicle Maintenance: Ensuring that the vehicle is clean, in good working condition, and properly fueled. The driver will be responsible for minor maintenance tasks (paid by the company) or reporting vehicle issues to superior.
- Adherence to Safety Protocols: Following any health and safety protocols, especially when transporting passengers with specific needs, such as elderly individuals or those with disabilities. This includes using proper lifting techniques and ensuring that passengers are securely fastened with seat belts or other safety devices
