What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fire - Life Safety Educator position at Goochland County?
This position is responsible for coordinating and presenting fire and life safety education programs in the community. The position would also be responsible for the development of fire and life safety materials and presentations, coordinating and facilitating training and drills, and assisting with emergency preparedness.
WORK HOURS
This position is a part-time position and may be required to work up to 28 hours a week as needed. Day(s) and hours of the week may vary depending on the needs of the position but may include some occasional nights and weekends.
- Develop and instruct fire and life safety programs by creating materials, scheduling of classes, and evaluating the effectiveness of programs within the community.
- Research, develop, design, and promote resource materials used to alleviate fire and life safety issues within the community.
- Lead or assist in the development, organization, and planning for safety awareness events within the community.
- Conduct home inspections to determine compliance with the requesting agency’s regulations and requirements.
- Continually upgrade and remain current on fire and life safety issues through education, technology, and attendance with various workshops.
- Assist or prepare various reports on fire and life safety grants and programs.
- Research and assist with applying for federal or state grants related to fire safety and assists with the management of the budget related to the grants.
- Assist businesses with developing, reviewing, and approving of emergency preparedness plans as assigned.
- Research and advise management on new fire prevention technologies.
- Perform other work as assigned within the Department.
- Must have knowledge of the basic principles of fire and life safety.
- Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with internal and external customers.

- Knowledge of conducting a risk analysis and using collected data to target high risk populations.

- Ability to physically operate, program, and understand public safety radio equipment including pagers, portable radios, and mobile radios.

- Ability to record and deliver information, to explain processes and procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain EMT certification.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Fire and Life Safety Educator Level 1 preferred
- If not certified, must obtain within 12 months of employment
- VA Department of Fire Programs Communicating with Your Community certificate preferred.
- If not certified, must obtain within 12 months of employment
- Prior experience in a wide and progressively responsible nature in fire-rescue service and emergency procedures or equivalent training, education, and/or experience.
- Valid Virginia Driver’s License with a driving record that meets HR Policy requirements.
- Must be able to pass an employment background check to include criminal background check.
- Must have good communication skills
- Must have a valid Virginia or National Emergency Medical Technician certification.
- Minimum of one year of experience in a position involving community education, public speaking, marketing, public affairs, or program administration, with experience in providing education programs or training, or in public safety work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is medium work, which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. This is a physically demanding position that requires standing, kneeling, lifting, and climbing. Additionally, the following physical abilities may be required: climbing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This is a non-essential position. Work is performed in inside and outside environmental conditions. The worker may be exposed to hazards of emergency incident scenes. The worker may be placed in stressful and hazardous situations. The worker may be required to wear limited personal protective equipment.
