Principal Planner / Planning Manager

Position Summary :

We are seeking an experienced Principal Planner / Planning Manager to lead long-range planning initiatives, manage complex development projects and help lead our planning team. This role requires a thorough understanding of California planning and the ability to lead with a collaborative and results-oriented approach, effectively managing projects, mentoring staff, and fostering productive relationships with public agencies.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Lead long-range planning efforts, such as General Plan updates, Specific Plans, and zoning ordinance amendments.
  • Manage significant development applications, including residential, commercial, and mixed-use projects.
  • Develop policies and strategies related to housing, transportation, and environmental sustainability.
  • Oversee environmental review processes in compliance with CEQA.
  • Supervise and mentor planning staff, ensuring high-quality work and professional development.
  • Prepare and present reports and recommendations to city councils, boards, and commissions.
  • Conduct community engagement to inform planning processes and build stakeholder support.
  • Collaborate with public agencies, community groups, and private developers to achieve project goals.
  • Evaluate and improve internal planning processes and systems.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Urban or Regional Planning, Architecture, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • At least eight years of progressively responsible experience in urban planning, including two years in a supervisory or project management role.
  • In-depth knowledge of California planning laws, including CEQA, the Subdivision Map Act, and State Planning and Zoning Law.
  • Demonstrated expertise in long-range planning and policy development.
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Proficiency in analyzing architectural plans, environmental documents, and policy frameworks.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
