POSITION SUMMARY:
- Under the direction of the Director of Psychiatric Nursing the Nurse Manager is responsible for maintaining the efficient functioning of the Unit, which is under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (Charge Nurse). Promotes a strong line of communication with department staff and ancillary services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for initiating, guiding, and directing the coordination of nursing services provided, including, but not limited to, scheduling, performance evaluations, and staff grievances.
- Functions as a resource person for nursing and other staff members and assists in necessary education to promote effective management of the Unit.
- Assumes responsibility for all the overall quality of nursing care provided by the Mental Health Units.
- Makes decisions regarding activities in area of responsibility in collaboration with the Director of Psychiatric Nursing in unusual situations.
- Provides continuous assessment of nursing staff.
- Participates in formulating budget for the Unit.
- Maintains effective use of manpower, equipment, and supplies.
- Participates in appropriate departmental and hospital committees with a focus on providing input regarding improving the quality of patient care services in the facility.
- Communicates actual or potential problems with Director of Psychiatric Nursing.
- Maintains communication with Nursing Administration to provide for appropriate staffing on all shifts as needed.
- Assesses patient care activities on an ongoing basis.
- Makes adjustments in nursing staff as required.
- Supervises overall nursing care performance and maintenance of quality patient care.
- Defines and implements ongoing performance improvement activities for areas of responsibility which correlate to hospital-wide performance improvement activities with involvement of all levels of personnel.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Current licensure in California as a Registered Nurse, Bachelors in Nursing preferred, minimum four (4) years of clinical practice in mental health services with emphasis on leadership and management experience, documented advanced education in psychiatric nursing with emphasis on specialty certification in the field, current CPR.
