Department: Family Birth Center

Definition of Position:

The Nurse Manager coordinates the nursing aspect of patient care for specific nursing departments utilizing a yearly operational budget in coordination with the DNS for the nursing division. The Nurse Manager is responsible for a working knowledge of the medical/legal and accreditation aspects of nursing for their own department. The Nurse Manager provides direct supervision of the RN's, LPN's, CNA's, Unit clerks in their department. The Nurse Manager works with the shift supervisor to coordinate the activities of the department for the 24 hour period. The Nurse Manager is responsible to the VP of Nursing.

Responsibilities:
Essential Job Functions:

Operations Management:
  • Oversee unit operations to ensure efficient patient care management.
  • Ensure appropriate patient assignments to beds and staff.
  • Perform daily rounds on patients and staff to ensure quality care.
  • Ensures appropriate staff levels consistent with department safe staffing plan.

Patient and Employee Satisfaction:

  • Manage the unit to ensure patient and employee satisfaction while promoting safety and retention.

Serve as a real-time resource and provide clinical expertise for staff and physicians in problem-solving.


Quality Initiatives and Process Improvements:
  • Coordinate quality initiatives and process improvements.
  • Align and manage to metrics for quality care.
Leadership Development:
  • Develop leadership skills among staff, including communication, decision-making, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
  • Lead staff development and support career advancement opportunities.
  • Function as a role model and encourage staff participation in their own development.
Staff Meetings and Governance:
  • Facilitate unit meetings and shared governance/leadership efforts.
Human Resources Management:
  • Handle selection, orientation, onboarding, and retention of staff.
  • Demonstrate leadership through coaching, performance evaluations, corrective actions, and development opportunities.
  • Maintain nursing staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training nurses and auxiliary staff.
  • Uphold the ICARE standards of behavior.

Budget and Resource Management:

  • Assist in developing the operational and capital budget.
  • Manage daily operational resources, including staff, supplies, and equipment, to ensure optimal productivity.
  • Achieve financial objectives by preparing an annual budget, scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances, and initiating corrective actions.

Policy and Procedure Maintenance:

  • Maintain nursing guidelines by writing and updating policies and procedures.
  • Ensure adherence to hospital and nursing division philosophies and standards of care, state board of nursing and nurse practice act requirements, and other governing agency regulations.

Direct Patient Care:

  • Establish personal rapport with patients to understand service requirements.
  • Promote patient independence by establishing care goals, teaching, and counseling patients and their families.
  • Manager is expected to maintain competency assessments to maintain/fill in for staffing when applicable.

Communication:

  • Maintain effective communication with staff, physicians, patients, families, and other departments.
  • Maintain patient, staff, and hospital confidentiality in all communications.
  • Utilize AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Expectations, Thank You) strategies to foster positive communication.

Team Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to oversee the quality program and care provision.
  • Maintain a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information, responding to requests, building rapport, and participating in team problem-solving methods.

Customer Service:

  • Display a positive attitude and treat others with honesty and respect.
  • Assess customer satisfaction through patient rounds and address unresolved issues through the appropriate chain of command.
  • Use AIDET strategies to optimize the patient experience and develop positive relationships with other departments.

Professional Development:

  • Demonstrate progressive leadership and effective management.
  • Engage in self-development and support a learning environment.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.

Safety and Cleanliness:

  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment by designing and implementing procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Develop and interpret infection-control policies and protocols, and enforce medication administration, storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.

Documentation and Confidentiality:

  • Maintain patient care service documentation by auditing patient and department records.
  • Protect patient and employee confidentiality by monitoring information processing.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure regulatory standards are achieved and maintain awareness of accrediting standards, CMS, and other required quality and safety measures.

Equipment and Supply Management:

  • Ensure operation of medical and administrative equipment by verifying emergency equipment availability, completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer’s instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, and maintaining equipment inventories.

Qualifications:

Education:

Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.

Experience:
  • 5 years of progressive clinical and management experience preferred.
  • Ability to facilitate change and demonstrate excellent communication and organization skills.
  • Skills in human relations and resource management.
  • Evidence of exceptional clinical and administrative nursing leadership.
  • Knowledge of current technology and equipment to meet patient needs.
  • Proficiency with PC and computer applications.


License Requirements:

Current RN license in the State of Oregon.
BLS/ACLS/PALS/TNCC/De-Escalation with Restraints.
Certification in specialty within one year.

Physical Requirements:
Meet the physical demands of the job, including lifting up to 50 pounds, frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of objects up to 25 pounds, and performing tasks that require physical activity such as stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.


Working Conditions:
Inside environment, protected from the weather but not necessarily temperature changes. Subject at times to infection, contagious disease, and hazardous material and equipment. May be subjected to combative patients. Variable noise levels.
