What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shared Youth Coordinator position at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church?
CONGREGATIONS:
This position would be in coordination with three churches to create a larger youth group. Christ Lutheran Church is in Marietta, GA. First United Lutheran Church is in Kennesaw, GA. Good Shepherd Lutheran Church is in Woodstock, GA.
The members of theses congregations serve all people, following Jesus, and strive for justice and peace. They commit their time, talents, and prayers to support the congregation, the local community, and regional, churchwide, and global ministries through the ELCA.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
In cooperation with the Pastors of Good Shepherd, First United, and Christ Lutheran, the part-time Shared Youth Coordinator will:
- effectively and efficiently develop, market, promote, implement, and lead the youth programs of the congregation (averaging 3-4 events per month). These events include:
- confirmation (meeting quarterly with rotating locations)
- high school and middle school youth group activities
- mission trips
- synodical and ELCA events
- service projects
- fundraisers
- works with each congregation to remain in touch with youth who have gone away to college.
- works with the Pastor(s) and congregation youth ministry committees in planning and coordinating events. Shared Youth Coordinator will manage financial and volunteer needs.
- updates the congregation’s social media & website accounts with current and frequent postings highlighting the ministry.
- serves as liaison to the Southeastern Synod and the ELCA for promotion of and youth participation in synodical and churchwide events.
- attends staff meetings and Congregation Council meetings as requested.
- Prioritize attendance at worship services, rotating between congregations to help develop relationships. Sunday attendance may be adjusted based on scheduled youth events.
- oversees, trains, and works with the Office Coordinator on congregational compliance for all child and youth protection.
SKILLS AND EXPECTATIONS:
The position of Shared Youth Coordinator requires great flexibility in hours available for work, including evenings and weekends. The position is centered around providing events for the youth. The actual number of hours required during any given week or month are those needed to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. Furthermore, it is recognized that the schedule may vary at different times of the year.
We are looking for a person who:
- has a strong personal faith in agreement with the teachings of the Lutheran church and a deep desire to help others grow in faith;
- is outgoing and eager to develop relationships with youth, their families, and the congregation;
- leads groups skillfully and also works well on teams;
- is excited to work within existing programs but also is enthusiastic about initiating new ideas that help develop and grow the overall ministry;
- fosters youth involvement in the youth activities and congregation’s ministries;
- recruits, motivates, and develops adult volunteers to participate in youth ministry;
- has excellent organization, communication, planning, computer, and social media skills;
- exhibits initiative and self-motivation to organize and implement activities considering planning, logistics, and support needed to complete projects;
- understands that there will be more events occurring seasonally (Christmas, summer, etc.) and that hours worked may be higher during these times.
- has a good understanding of using Microsoft Office, Canva, videos, and social media platforms
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
- Be a member of an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) congregation or a Full Communion Partner congregation.
- Practice strong self-care and maintain a healthy sense of boundaries.
- Have experience with youth ministry.
- Have at least some post-secondary education or equivalent experience with planning, organizing, and equipping teams and individuals.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM THE CONGREGATION:
- Accept the Youth Coordinator, uphold him/her in prayer, and accord him/her love, respect and good will.
- Arrange for needed continuing education
- Provide for program costs for the Youth Coordinator’s participation
- Personal office space with necessary office and program equipment and supplies
- Caring, supporting, and nurturing work environment with a commitment to collaboration and innovation
- A 30-day, six-month and annual review the first year, along with an annual review thereafter. Provide a yearly salary review.
Contract Length
This contract will be reviewed annually by all three congregations.
Job Types: Part-time, Contract
Pay: $30,000.00 - $31,000.00 per year
Expected hours: 20 – 25 per week
