Overview :
The Advocate Counselor provides a range of individual and group, supportive services, to youth and their families in a collaborative school support program. The Advocate Counselor utilizes a youth development model that actively engages young people and supports academic success through guidance and related activities. The Advocate Counselor is fully integrated into the life of this English Language Learners High School.
Reports to : Program Director
Location : 1980 Lafayette Ave, Bronx, New York, 10473
Hours : 35 Hours / Week; Non-Exempt
Schedule : Monday - Friday, 8am to 4pm
Plus an extra hour after school and / or Weekend trips as needed)
Salary : $44,000 - $50,000
Salary determined by years of experience in related work.)
Major Duties :
- Actively supporting the school throughout the school day with behavior management, attendance outreach, distribution of materials, greeting students in the morning, being a liaison between students and teachers.
- In conjunction with GSS team and school, develop special events, after-school activities, workshops, etc.
- Provide social / emotional support and one to one student support sessions.
- Heavily providing services and resources to students who are new to the country.
- Develop group work strategies that support and enhance students skill development and help build on youth competencies.
- Perform family interventions to support family engagement and participation in the school community and the lives of their youth.
- Refer youth and families to appropriate resources both within the Good Shepherd Program Network and other community organizations as appropriate.
- Participate in staff / team meetings with GSS and DOE staff.
- Lead and / or participate in occasional out-of-city and overnight trips for leadership, educational or enhancement purposes.
- Provide crisis intervention and conflict mediation as needed.
- Coordinate with other Good Shepherd Services team members and DOE staff.
- Generate data required for statistical reporting and ensure that appropriate paperwork / database entry is completed.
- Perform other duties as needed.
