Purpose or General Objective: Under the direction of the Community Tax Coordinator and Site Assistant, this role prepares tax returns for the communities in Albion, Homer and other non-VITA sites under the guidelines of IRS protocol. This person must provide top-quality service and have the highest ethical standards for customers.
Essential Duties:
- Provide high-quality tax return preparation to all taxpayers.
- Interview the taxpayer using Form 13614-C, Intake/Interview and Quality Review Sheet, to determine if all income, deductions, and allowable credits are claimed.
- Engage the taxpayer when preparing the tax return to ensure understanding of all the information on the intake sheet. Advise the taxpayer that they are ultimately responsible for the information on the return.
- Provide administrative support for tax sites.
- Certify, at a minimum, at the Basic level for IRS tax preparation. For more complicated returns, certify at the Circular 230 Advanced, Military, Puerto Rico levels, Foreign Student, or international tax levels.
- Prepare only returns that are within the tax preparer’s certification level(s) and withing the scope of the program.
- Assist with the intake and screening process at tax sites.
- Assist with setting up and cleaning up after-tax sites.
- Provides Quality Review of taxes as needed.
- Attend relevant meetings and trainings.
- Assist with ‘Facilitate Self Assist’ sites, as needed.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Requires High School Diploma or GED.
- Must be able to pass the IRS Certification Exam (Advanced Level).

- Organizational skills in office and file management.
- Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with a diverse population of volunteers, clients, and community members.

- Must be able to work a flexible schedule.
- A valid Michigan driver’s license with a driving record in compliance with Goodwill of Central Michigan’s Heartland, Inc. insurance carrier requirements. Applicant must have reliable transportation and appropriate insurance coverage.
