Philosophy:
Kapolei Charter School (KCS) is a free public charter school where all students will be welcome to enroll in KCS. KCS will provide customize, meaningful, and alternative educational opportunities to students who may not be successful in the traditional educational system. The school will provide an attractive, flexible learning environment with individualized attention and instruction to ensure all students who enter the school are able to become academically successful. It will be equipped to serve a largely underserved population, working to engage students in their education and provide them with meaningful opportunities to earn a high school diploma and industry certification or college credit to ensure a smooth transition into career success.
Summary:
As an Educational Assistant Paraprofessional with Kapolei Charter School by Goodwill Hawaii, you will facilitate learning for students, meeting students “where they are”. You will employ a student-centered approach effectively tailoring the service delivery strategies to the individual students’ needs approaching education with creativity and innovation. Strategies include one-on-one instruction, case stories, seminars, self-paced lessons, and computer-based tutorials. Utilizes appropriate training methods, motivational techniques and related work adjustment tools. The position will work with the instructional team in meeting the educational objectives and adhering to Hawaii State Standards. In addition, to exemplify our Mission Statement of interrupting generational poverty by providing customized, meaningful, and alternative educational opportunities to students who may not be successful in the traditional educational system.
Education:
- Forty-eight (48) semester credits of baccalaureate-level courses from a regionally accredited institution of higher education recognized by the Department. The 48 credits may be from various programs or academic subject areas. In addition, 6 of the 48 credits must have been for math and English courses at the baccalaureate level; or
- An Associate in Arts or Science degree from a regionally accredited institution recognized by the Department. The credits earned for the degree must have been for courses that are baccalaureate level; or
- A certificate with a minimum score of 459 on the ParaPro Assessment, provided by the Educational Testing Service.
Experience and Qualifications:
- Prior relevant teaching experience
- Experience working with students in a non-traditional setting and/or in adult education setting highly preferred
- Experience working with online learning is a plus.
- Demonstrated success meeting educational needs and understanding students learning styles
- A strong belief that all students can succeed
- A do-whatever-it takes attitude including a willingness to work occasionally on the weekend or in the evening
- An exceptional ability to respond well to feedback and implement it immediately
- Student/classroom management techniques; common academic, social, behavioral and developmental problems of students.
- Ability to implement effective classroom management and student care methods and techniques; speak and work effectively with students, teachers, parents and community members.
- Ability to assess students' progress and modify learning activities and methods as necessary.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Implement lesson plans that ensure the attainment of state learning standards and the additional specific grade-by-grade learning standards set forth in the charter.
- Clearly and consistently communicating and upholding school rules, values, and expectations in and out of the classroom
- Setting an urgent, respectful, and positive tone in the classroom
- Building relationships with students that communicate the importance of college success and your belief that they will succeed
- Taking on responsibilities outside of their content area instruction such as advisory, lunch duty, enrichment classes, and after school activities
- Builds and shapes instruction frameworks around student needs including online learning tools and content.
- Develops student’s individual learning plans along with the coaches based on intake assessment. Determines students’ educational track, from the least integrated instruction (Credit Recovery) to the most integrated (Knowledge Mastery).
- Assesses appropriate students’ life experiences that apply towards school credits.
- Manages and monitors students’ learning experience to ensure student engagement and accomplish learning goals.
- Work with coaches and leadership staff to support students.
- Attend all team and professional development meetings
- Accept and incorporate feedback and coaching from administrative staff.
- Serve as an advisor to students, including organizing advisory groups, overseeing the academic and behavioral progress.
- Assist in research and identification of best learning practices to further the school operational procedures.
- Perform other duties, as deemed appropriate, by the School Director.
