Role Overview :

Under the direct supervision of the VP of Finance and Accounting, the Staff Accountant performs functions pertaining to financial reporting, assists with monitoring and reporting financial results, provides quality control for day-to-day accounting functions, and supports the efforts of the Finance Department.

Exemplary Duties / Responsibilities :

  • Maintain the fixed asset and associated depreciation schedules on the FAS Software System; provide monthly detail to the accounting team for General Journal entries; ensure proper recording of new purchases and disposals.
  • Develop monthly and year-end financial reporting.
  • Prepare and analyze information using spreadsheet reports; verify information.
  • Prepare general ledger entries by maintaining records and files and reconciling accounts.
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Perform monthly accruals, amortization of prepaid expenses, and recording of adjusting and reclassification journal entries, if necessary.
  • Process cash receipts.
  • Perform other accounting, financial, or administrative tasks as may be required occasionally, quite often, or at short notice - by the VP of Finance and Accounting.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. This position provides support and guidance to accounting clerks.
  • Support employee and contract payroll processing.
  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned

STAFF ACCOUNTANT QUALIFICATIONS :

Minimum Qualifications :

  • BA / BS in Accounting or a minimum of five years progressive experience.
  • Decision making - accepts responsibility, takes initiative, and applies analytical skills to solving problems and making decisions.
  • Hours - 40 hours weekly. Specific hours are based upon business operations and the needs of the organization; overtime from time to time may be required.
  • Safety : adherence to sound safety practices, rules, and regulations.
  • Possess knowledge of Windows, Excel, and Word required
  • Financial office practices, procedures, methods, and systems.
  • The current principles and practices in operating procedures and data processing.
  • The application of data processing in maintaining accounting records and financial administration.
  • Must work well with employees and the public courteously and professionally.
  • Must work well with diverse cultures and a developmentally disabled population.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Expertise in general accounting principles.
  • Able to absorb and apply principles and procedures of various governmental entities (e.g., OMB Circulars).
  • Intermediate-to-advanced ability to use Microsoft Excel.
  • Familiar with MAS90 or comparable accounting software.
  • Thorough understanding of the agency chart of accounts and cost allocation.
  • Analytical skills, including deductive reasoning.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with all levels of staff, service participants, customers, and the public.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook and Word.
  • Provide own transportation to use on company business.
  • Promote and demonstrate cooperation and teamwork.
