Job Summary

Goshen College invites applications for a full-time Assistant or Associate Professor of English to teach literature and writing courses beginning in August 2025. Candidates with one or more of the following specialties preferred: Global Anglophone, World Literature, Multi-Ethnic literatures, British literature, American Literature before 1900, or Shakespeare. Experience teaching composition and general education classes is also desired.

Primary teaching responsibilities will be courses for the Core (general education) program, including first-year composition, writing and/or research classes, as well as upper-level English and interdisciplinary courses. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate strengths in thematic areas for comparative courses that resonate with other academic programs at Goshen College – e.g., Sustainability, Women’s and Gender Studies, International Education, and Peace and Conflict Studies. Willingness to lead off-campus experiential domestic and international courses is also a plus.

The English department offers three majors: English, Writing, and TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language), with a curriculum that focuses on English literature and language in a global context, and issues of social justice such as race, gender, and class.

All members of the department have opportunities to develop courses within their expertise. Goshen College is a teaching college with a 4-3-1 load, and all teaching faculty serve on institution-wide committees and assist with advising, as well as recruiting prospective students. The successful candidate must be ready to contribute to our strong tradition of excellence in research and publication as well as teaching.

The position also includes mentoring an increasingly diverse student body and supporting departmental co-curriculars, such as publishing and storytelling initiatives. Candidates must be interested in working closely with students and fellow faculty members as part of a small, vibrant campus and community.

Essential Functions

  • Prepare course syllabi for assigned courses in collaboration with department chair and GC Core director
  • Teach assigned courses with appropriate active and engaged learning practices
  • Work with Junior and Senior English Seminar students
  • Mentor students through advising activities
  • Participate in department, school, and college meetings and committees
  • Participate in recruiting events and initiatives
  • Pursue appropriate professional development opportunities, including scholarly activities
  • Complete other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Students in assigned courses
  • Student workers and other students in department as needed

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. required (dissertation completed by August 2025)
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college/university level
  • Interest in thematic areas for interdisciplinary teaching: for example, gender, race, ethnicity, the environment, social justice, media studies, or performance studies
  • Commitment to teaching in the Core, including interdisciplinary courses outside of English
  • Commitment to working with diverse populations
  • Commitment to the mission and core values of Goshen College
