Job Summary:
Goshen College invites applications for a full-time appointment as Nursing Simulation Coordinator. This position will include oversight, management of equipment, facilitation of simulated learning experiences, coordination with faculty, collaboration with simulation partner, and creating a safe learning environment for all learners. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a commitment to engaging with simulation as a learning modality and will come with certification in this specialty or the commitment to obtain INACSL certification in this specialty – immediately upon hire.
The department offers three programs of study: basic baccalaureate, family nurse practitioner at the master’s level, and the doctor of nursing practice. The department of nursing, a CCNE accredited institution, has provided baccalaureate nursing education for over sixty years. The department of nursing is highly regarded for preparing excellent, culturally sensitive, clinically skillful nurses well-grounded in theory and able to think critically.
Essential Functions:
- Day-to-Day Functions
- Coordinate the supply and orders for nursing laboratories
- Be the liaison between course professors, simulation partner, and Administrative Assistant for supply ordering.
- Maintenance of simulation library of developed experiences
- Overall responsibility for organization of simulation lab, running of the manikins, moulage of the manikins, procurement of needed simulation supplies, and organization of the working spaces, including clean up of area and manikins.
- Coordinate the supply and orders for nursing laboratories
- Policy and Evaluation
- Develop relevant new policies for simulation labs
- E.g. pre-briefing, simulation template, and electronic storage, debriefing
- Recording policies for simulation and storage of recorded materials
- Use of simulation across the curriculum including a bridge into practice (eg SBAR reporting)
- Develop summative and formative assessment rubrics
- Collaborate with faculty and simulation partner educators, as content experts, on the development of simulation experiences, with an emphasis on scaffolding learning into professional practice
- Incorporate QSEN competencies
- Integration with local health care providers and institutions as needed
- Develop relevant new policies for simulation labs
- Strategic Functions – Be the thought leader in moving simulation towards departmental goals
- Curricular functions
- In collaboration with the nursing faculty, identify disparities in curriculum content map and in clinical experiences at undergrad and grad levels that can be remediated through the integration of a simulated experience.
- Develop key simulation scenarios for formative and summative evaluations.
- Develop goals for the academic year e.g. increasing number of simulation experiences year over year
- Coordinate with faculty members for development of scenarios appropriate to their courses.
- Be point person for all mid, high fidelity simulation
- Coordinate with MSN director on usage of “standardized patient” actors procured from the community and trained as needed.
- Coordinate the vetting of new products
- Be a thought and action leader in inter-professional education – for example:
- Standardized patients with theater department
- Participation in mock emergency disaster drill with Goshen Hospital
- Curricular functions
- Communication Functions
- Prepare regular report for curriculum committee meeting regarding simulation as a strategic goal – using SWOT as a format when appropriate
- Work with the director of graduate programs to provide presence as needed in MSN subcommittee meetings.
- Serve on ad hoc committee with Goshen Hospital toward simulation partnerships
- Attend meetings with Academic Dean as invited by Program Chair
Supervisory Responsibility:
- Teaching assistants
- Potential simulation technician in the future
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing required
- Master’s degree in nursing preferred
- Prior experience teaching undergraduate nursing students (clinically or academically) preferred
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:
- RN license required for the state of Indiana
- INACSL (International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning) certifications in this specialty area is a plus but can be enrolled upon hire
Skills and Competencies:
Required:
- Demonstration of a commitment to engaging with simulation as a learning modality
- Excellent aptitude and ability in teaching and/or applied practice
- Collaborative and creative approach to working relationships with colleagues, students, and community partners – standardized patients
- Demonstrate intercultural competence and ability to work effectively with others in a diverse, multicultural environment
- Strong organizational skills
Preferred:
- Some experience in simulation leadership is preferred
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift light loads (up to 25 pounds)- including manikins and simulation equipment
- Prolonged sitting and use of keyboard
- Ability to complete primary tasks by viewing computer screen(s) for the majority of any given work day (extensive use of computer technology)
- Considerable phone use and operation of copier and other standard office equipment
Work Environment/Environmental Conditions:
- Work will primarily take place in a standard indoor office environment and in mock acute care hospital settings, mock provider offices, and a nursing skills laboratory.
