GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
The Behind the Wheel Trainer / Operator performs duties as a bus driver as needed; is responsible for preparing, conducting and evaluating behind the wheel bus driver training for bus and para-transit operators and providing road observations as required. Conducts bus operator orientation, pre-licensing training and transit safety programs and provides training assistance to the training and safety staff. Assists with documenting, evaluating, and analyzing effectiveness of employee participation in training programs. Transports passengers over specified distance points according to a set time schedule, assisting the department with training and related work as apparent or assigned.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Illustrative Duties:
- Assisting with designing and implementing training programs to develop the skills of operations employees to include the recommendation of remedial and safety training programs.
- Conducting annual operator refresher training.
- Facilitating behind-the-wheel training and orientation programs for all new fixed route and para-transit operators.
- Assisting with designing training aids, tests, handouts and lesson plans for training classes.
- Providing assessments and evaluations of employee skill levels on a daily basis.
- Performing all preparation training for the CDL
- Recommending route/stop changes to supervisor and attending all Planning Committees.
- Training and motivating others toward proper driving and safety standards.
- Attending the Accident Prevention Committee and assisting with providing management statistical data on accidents as needed.
- Maintaining accurate records and preparing complete and comprehensive reports.
- Assisting with the monitoring of customer service, fare inspections and safe operating practices.
- Performing ongoing ride a longs to ensure that the desired knowledge, skills, and attitudes transfer from the classroom to predefined on-the-job behavior.
- Providing information and training in equipment updates/improvements.
- Assisting with developing alternative training methods if expected improvements are not achieved.
- Willingness work flexible hours, including split shifts, evenings and weekends
- Keep current on the operation of all service routes
- Abide by all safety and traffic regulations/laws as well as company policy/procedures-must have an impeccable driving record.
- Properly completes all required paperwork which includes time cards, passenger counts, pre/post-inspection checks, accident reports, and other applicable forms/reports
- Follow the uniform guidelines and maintain a neat, clean, and well-groomed appearance at all times.
- Work in corporation with other employees- Display a professional, pleasant and cooperative demeanor with team members and supervisory/management staff at all times.
- Assist the Training Coordinator or Supervisory staff with various training projects as necessary.
- Provide leadership and mentorship to co-workers.
- Must be proficient in the use of office equipment, to include the PC.
Additional Duties:
- Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS REQUIRED
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED, and extensive experience in transit operations is preferred.
- A minimum of 3 years' experience in training or supervision along with a Training Certification from the Transportation Safety Institute
- Must have or be able to obtain a class B Commercial Driver's License with passenger endorsement.
- Six years transit driving experience, possession of a good driving record, and the ability to drive in all types of adverse weather.
- Maintain excellent attendance including during adverse weather.
- Portray a positive and professional attitude.
- Demonstrate proficiency in all bus operator duties.
- Must be able to meet the Department of Transportation physical requirements and maintain a DOT card.
- Minimum Education Qualification can be substituted with an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
Working Conditions:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration. May be moderately exposed to unpleasant working conditions to include dust, noise, temperature, weather, petroleum products, and chemicals while at operating facilities, during which the incumbent should observe all policies and procedures, safety precautions and regulations, and use all protective clothing and devices provided.
Physical Requirements:
Works in an environment where there is minimum exposure to dust, noise, or temperature. May be moderately exposed to unpleasant working conditions to include dust, noise, temperature, weather, petroleum products, and chemicals while visiting operating facilities, properties, construction sites, and potential properties during which the incumbent should observe all policies and procedures, safety precautions and regulations, and use all protective clothing and devices provided.
