Job Description:
The Site Manager is responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations of Goucher Prison Education Partnership (GPEP) at two Maryland state prisons. This position serves as a primary contact for all Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) staff at the prisons and as a primary contact and troubleshooter for faculty, students, and volunteers. The Site Manager will spend significant time on-site at the prisons; their work will include pursuing clearances, reserving spaces, and ensuring consistent college operations. This position also serves as an academic advisor for a subset of GPEP students. The significant administrative and decision-making responsibilities of this position require discretion and independent judgment. They deeply impact GPEP’s operation, service provided to students, and ability to achieve larger goals.
Essential Job Functions:
75% Manage GPEP operations at the two prisons where GPEP enrolls students, ensuring access to an excellent college education.
- Manage and maintain effective communication and collaboration with internal and external partners (e.g., prison partners, students, tutors, faculty, and college staff) to ensure smooth operation and timely resolution of challenges.
- Ensures all classes, meetings, and events are scheduled and run on time in appropriate spaces with necessary personnel and materials. Works with prison administrators to reserve space and accommodation needs for classes and events, ensures the approval of necessary materials and personnel, circulates accurate student lists, and develops systems for handling diverse, frequent, and complex challenges.
- Responsible for course logistics running smoothly, such as obtaining clearances for guest lecturers, texts, films, lab equipment, and other resources.
- Oversees timely acquisition, delivery, and collection of materials (e.g., textbooks, DVDs, electronic equipment) for courses and events.
- Leads the planning and execution of student meetings and college events, including engaging sessions to help students meet identified objectives.
- Plan, arrange, and facilitate site visits by key stakeholders in collaboration with GPEP staff members
15 % Serve as an academic advisor for a subset of Goucher students enrolled through GPEP.
- Prepares for and engages in regular in-person academic advising sessions with advisees, who are primarily first-generation, adult college students. Provides guidance to resolve individual challenges related to institutional issues and their academic and professional success.
5% Other related responsibilities needed to ensure successful delivery of academic program including responding to sudden emergencies and unexpected events at the prisons or in the GPEP community.
Non-Essential Functions:
5% As necessary, serve as a representative for GPEP / the college at relevant conferences and other events.
Education:
Required: Bachelor’s degree
Professional Experience:
Required: Demonstrated success in program or project management in an educational setting. Academic experience and pedagogical expertise necessary to provide high-quality academic advising to college students enrolled in a wide range of courses.
Preferred: Work, activism, or lived experience with incarcerated populations, the criminal justice system, or underserved populations.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Applicant must hold a valid driver’s license and be able to be cleared to enter the correctional institutions with which GPEP partners and must maintain that clearance throughout his/her employment.
This position will be on-call weekday afternoons and several evenings every week while classes are in session. This position regularly works on-site at the prisons until 9 pm several nights per week.
