Job Description
Summary of the Job
This is skilled work at the journeyman level involving rough and finished carpentry. Employees in this class perform skilled hand and bench carpentry duties including the operation of power driven woodworking machinery.
Responsibilities
- Performs general carpentry work in the alteration, repair and maintenance of buildings, floors, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, windows, screens, scaffolding concrete forms, wood fixtures and furniture.
- Repair tables, chairs, benches, cupboards, counters and truck beds
- Builds concrete forms, false work and scaffolds; supervises pouring and smoothing of concrete.
- Performs limited cabinetmaker work such as building less complex benches, bookcases, chests, cupboards, lockers and shelves.
- Performs skilled bench work in a carpenter shop operating power saws, joiners, wood lathes, planers; Repairs mechanical doors, closers and locks.
- Performs light masonry, glazing, painting, roofing and sheet metal work
- Estimates time and material for jobs and orders materials.
- Supervises assigned patients, inmates or laborers in carpentry and masonry work.
Requirements
- Graduation from a standard high school.
- Experience as a journeyman carpenter or completion of an apprenticeship in the trade.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools and materials of the trade and the qualities and uses of various woods.
- Ability to make simple estimates of time and materials.
- Ability to climb and work from scaffolding or at some distance above the ground.
- Skill in the use of the tools, materials and equipment used in the carpentry trade.
