The Cocoa Police Department (CPD) is a CFA-accredited, community-focused agency serving 20,000 residents in Brevard County, Florida. Just 45 minutes from Orlando and 15 minutes from Port Canaveral and the Atlantic beaches, Cocoa offers front-row views of Kennedy Space Center launches and an outstanding quality of life. Our medium-sized force of 71 sworn officers embraces modern technology, strong neighborhood partnerships, and multiple specialty units. We supply all equipment, including take-home vehicles (out-of-county permitted, 50 miles from City Limit), and welcome beards, visible tattoos, and outer-vest carriers.

Experience & Incentives

  • Sign-on bonus: Up to $10,000 ($2,000 per full year of prior sworn service, max 5 years).
  • State bonus: Additional $5,000 for newly certified officers or officers relocating to Florida.
  • Experience pay: 3 % for each documented year of service (up to 5 years, max 15 %).
  • Education incentives: $360/yr for an associate's, $600/yr for a bachelor's, plus state education incentive (max $1,440/yr).
  • Pension buy-back for previous sworn service.
Job Summary
Under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant, Certified Police Officers patrol assigned areas; respond to emergency and non-emergency calls; enforce federal, state, and municipal laws; investigate crimes and traffic crashes; and protect life and property. Officers write detailed reports, testify in court, provide first aid, maintain constant radio contact with dispatch, and may serve in specialty units such as SWAT, K-9, Marine, Motors, Crisis Negotiation, Traffic Homicide, Detective, or Community Engagement.

Primary Responsibilities
Law Enforcement & Community Policing

  • Conduct proactive patrols by cruiser, bike, boat, or on foot.
  • Respond to calls for service; observe and address suspicious activity and safety hazards.
Crime Prevention & Investigation

  • Investigate crimes, collect evidence, interview victims/witnesses/suspects.
  • Arrest offenders, secure crime scenes, and collaborate with detectives and forensic units.
Traffic & Public Safety

  • Enforce traffic laws, issue citations, conduct DUI investigations.
  • Respond to crashes, assist victims, direct traffic at accidents and events.
Emergency Response & Specialized Assignments

  • Provide backup in critical incidents, domestic disputes, and disasters.
  • Participate in search-and-rescue, SWAT, K-9, Marine, Motors, Crisis Negotiation, and other specialty teams.
Public Engagement & Community Relations

  • Attend community meetings and outreach events; build trust with residents and businesses.
  • Educate the public on crime-prevention and safety initiatives.
Administrative & Training Duties

  • Prepare detailed reports and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Attend ongoing training to maintain skills, certifications, and fitness.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Certification: Florida Certified Law Enforcement Officer or eligible for FDLE Equivalency of Training (FDLE Form 76).
  • Education: High school diploma or GED (college degree preferred).
  • License: Valid Florida driver's license (or ability to obtain within 45 days of hire).
  • Criminal history: No felony convictions or misdemeanors involving perjury/false statements; no dishonorable military discharge.
  • Screening: Must pass comprehensive background check, polygraph/CVSA, medical exam, psychological evaluation, and drug screen.
  • Physical ability: Capable of medium/heavy work—lifting/pushing up to 100 lbs, running, climbing, kneeling, and standing for extended periods.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Thorough understanding of federal, state, and city criminal laws and department directives.
  • Strong report writing, problem-solving, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with computers (Microsoft Office) and in-car/mobile technology.
  • Ability to make sound decisions under stress and maintain integrity with minimal supervision.
Work Enviroment & Physical Demands
Duties are primarily performed on-site in environments that may involve physical hazards and high-stress decision-making. Officers must balance, climb, crawl, kneel, lift, push/pull, reach, perform repetitive motions, and sustain long periods of standing or walking in varied weather conditions.
