An insurance underwriter's job is to assess the risk of potential insurance applicants and decide whether to offer them coverage :
Review applications : Underwriters review insurance applications and supporting documentation.
- Assess clients : Underwriters evaluate clients' financial status, backgrounds, and other information, such as age, marital status, medical history, and driving record.
- Analyze risk : Underwriters use underwriting software to analyze the risk profile of potential clients.
- Determine coverage : Underwriters decide whether to offer coverage and, if so, what the terms and conditions will be. They also determine coverage amounts and premiums.
- Re-assess risk : Underwriters re-assess risk when policies come up for renewal.
