Position Summary
The Vascular Sonographer performs the daily clinical operations and a wide variety of technical procedures including, but not limited to, peripheral vascular, venous reflux, and carotid ultrasound. Enters exam data into the system, ensures completeness of exam, and prepares exam for interpretation. Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as appropriate based on the level of patient contact this position requires.
Responsibilities of the Position
- Performs peripheral vascular, venous reflux, and carotid imaging in accordance with lab protocols and standard practices.
- Assists Physician during vein center procedures.
- Reviews inpatient requisitions and prioritizes patient list in order of severity of illness, special procedures, special requests, and equipment availability; revises patient schedule as new procedures are requested and circumstances change.
- Performs required quality control checks.
- Assures the procurement, storage, and routing of supplies for room operation.
- Ensures reusable instruments are maintained and disinfected as required.
- Reviews patient information and orders at the time of the procedure. Confirms type of exam and appropriate diagnosis; requests clarification of order if necessary; determines interpreting physician.
- Downloads examination images and data into PACs system; enters findings into PACs system upon completion of exam.
- Mentors and evaluates ultrasound students as required.
- Communicates technical and patient care related information according to established processes and timelines.
Minimum Education
- High school graduate or GED equivalency is required.
- Successful completion of a CAAHEP approved school of ultrasound or cardiovascular technology or equivalent experience.
Certifications/Licenses
- Current certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or certification within one year of hire date.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification obtained through the American Heart Association (AHA) is required upon hire.
- Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
Minimum Work Experience
- Knowledge of diagnostic ultrasound principles, concepts, and methodology sufficient to perform high quality diagnostic studies.
- Ability to identify which images to include, looking for differences between healthy and pathological areas.
- Ability to tailor the scope of an exam by adding additional image as dictated by pathology.
- Knowledge of vascular cross-sectional anatomy and pathophysiology.
- Knowledge of m-mode, doppler and color flow characteristics.
- Ability to recognize vascular structures viewed from various angles.
- Knowledge of ultrasound physics and instrumentation sufficient to identify and eliminate artifact and optimize images.
- Ability to operate, maintain and troubleshoot cardiovascular equipment.
