What are the responsibilities and job description for the Custodial Maintenance Personnel position at Grace Methodist Church?
Principle Function:
Facilitate the cleaning and maintenance of church properties, which may include the parsonages, by performing duties described herein:
Primary Tasks: Maintenance Responsibilities:
- Update records of maintenance for relevant church properties
- Assist Trustees with maintenance/repairs
- Ensure compliance with federal and state laws relative to building sites
- Monitor buildings and grounds and maintain a presence during any required maintenance by outside contractors to answer questions, unlock/lockup and contact Trustee representative or supervisor with questions or concerns.
- Execute repairs for routine maintenance projects
- Liaison with Supervisor and contractors for routine service for church properties
- In cooperation with Supervisor, recruit and coordinate volunteers for maintenance service projects.
- Painting/Staining as required throughout church, offices and parsonage, when approved by supervisor, Senior Pastor and/or Trustees
- As requested by trustees and approved by supervisor or Senior Pastor, make necessary repairs and upgrade to all church property.
- General maintenance and repairs such as leaky faucets, changing filters, lubricating circulating pumps, etc.
- Patching, painting and other general repairs throughout church, offices and parsonages as required/requested.
- All basic preventative maintenance throughout church property.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
Church Grounds:
- Pick up litter from lawn and landscaping
- Snow removal, as necessary
- Additional cleaning as required following major events, church holidays, and Bible School
Secondary tasks: Occasional duties:
- Assist in regular custodial duties as necessary.
- Start and run the Snow Blower and Snow Brush in October - Fill gas tanks with fresh 90 octane gas
- Service flag pole - replace worn flags, broken clevis or hasp clips that hold the flag
- Be available to ministries, guests, program staff as furniture needs to be moved, set up or taken down & stored.
- Keep overall vigil on the conditions of the premises, reporting all signs of deterioration and need of repair to Trustees.
- Unlock church daily and lock up nightly in cooperation and rotation with other custodians.
- Shampoo carpets, during summer months/low church activities
- Change air condition filters (heat and air)(split system on first floor) from Parlors, Welcome Center, Childrens’ sign in area and Childrens’ wing, some are washable filters
- Grease bearings twice a year; and organ air handler twice a year
- Gather recycling-break down cardboard boxes, separate tin, glass and plastic from the kitchen and gather paper from the church office.
- Additional cleaning within the church offices, youth center, or GIM building if caught up with church cleaning during Sunday services.
This position requires giving direct supervision to others:
- Volunteers as recruited for special projects
- Give necessary direction and advice to other custodians in conjunction with supervisor.
Typical decisions made without additional approval:
- Purchase and/or repair of items within relevant church properties as directed by Trustees, Supervisor or Pastor
- Transport recycling to recycling center via personal vehicle without reimbursement as needed or use church van if available.
Other responsibilities may be assigned to you by your immediate supervisor and/or Senior Pastor, as deemed necessary to enhance the spiritual life and ministry of the church.

Pay: $30,000.00 - $32,000.00 per year
