Job Description
- Will arrive on time and ready to start work on each scheduled shift.
- To carry out duties in a safe manner and in accordance with the Code of Safe Working Practice in Cemeteries.
- To maintain good relationships with clergy, funeral directors, other staff and visitors to the cemetery.
- To preserve an appropriate and dignified attitude at all times.
Grave Digging * To excavate graves for funeral services including covering up excavated soil, placing out boards, plywood struts and matting.
- To cover the excavation with boards immediately after completion of excavation, to protect the public and leave the site clean and tidy. To remove these cover boards shortly before the funeral is due to take place.
- All Grounds personnel are to be present but maintain a discreet distance from the grave at funeral services to assist both funeral directors and the cemetery personnel at their request during the actual service.
- To constantly check and to remove any water from the prepared grave prior to the burial.
- Ensure the paths that the funeral procession will walk are clear of all litter, debris and free from obstructions leading up to and around the grave area.
- Back-fill the grave after the funeral service, removing all excess material and leaving the grave in a safe and clean environment. To place the floral tributes on and around the back-filled grave.
- Remove floral tributes seven days after the funeral service and dispose of all waste.
Miscellaneous Activities: * Maintenance gravestones in need of repair to include any sunken gravestones debris and trimming of overgrown grass directly around the gravestone if needed.
- Trims around all gravestones, monuments, markers and fence as needed to keep the cemetery presentable.
- Performs daily cleaning and maintenance of cemetery such as removing any debris (paper/trash) that litters the cemetery and watering flowers in the spring and summer months.
- Performs spring, summer, and fall clean up in March, July, September, and November in the cemetery including the removal of old, worn out decorations, flowers or leaves.
- Removes all Christmas decorations starting March 15 from the cemetery.
- Removes branches that are littered in the cemetery after a wind or ice storm in a timely manner.
- Levels and seeds new graves as needed and levels and seeds old graves that have settled.
- Will clean main office daily. Clean bathroom and replenish toilet paper, soap and paper towel daily.
- Generally clean and maintain all tools and equipment for the purpose of the job, ensuring good housekeeping and security of all tools.
- Apply rock salt and clear snow on roads and pathways within the cemetery during periods of adverse weather conditions, thus securing a safe environment for both funeral services and the public.
- To carry out improvement works for the cemetery and cemetery offices.
- Must be in good physical condition and be capable of not only performing physical work, but also operating machinery.
- Must possess a valid Driver’s license.
- Must be able to read, comprehend and relay simple instructions.
- Must be able to read a map and assist families to locate loved ones or person of interest.
- Must pass drug screen.
