Job Summary

The Student Conduct Specialist supports the Director in the development and advancement of the office’s mission, goals, and objectives, while providing oversight for the timely review, investigation, adjudication, and resolution of alleged violations of the Code of Student Conduct. The Student Conduct Specialist works with cross-functional partners to assess and address emerging student conduct matters and assists with development and implementation of educational outreach and interventions. The Student Conduct Specialist must be responsive to completing priorities in an active and escalating work environment, while meeting the on-going needs of the Office of Student Conduct, a Division of Student Affairs, and the University in a timely manner. This position requires the ability to act promptly, decisively, and with efficiency.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

Administration of the Code of Student Conduct:

  • Oversee the implementation of the Code of Student Conduct and serve as the Director’s primary designee.

  • Assume a leadership role in the interpretation and implementation of the academic integrity process.

  • Serve as the primary hearing officer for cases to resolve allegations of student academic and behavioral misconduct through informal hearings, and committee hearings.

  • Responsible for investigating, adjudicating and resolving an independent caseload with a focus on allegations of academic misconduct, group misconduct and those cases requiring greater competency and experience.

  • Coordinate the drafting and issuing of notice of charge letters, tracks students’ and student organization’s responses to these letters, send follow-up notices and applies registration holds when necessary.

  • Utilize the conduct database system to create and maintain student conduct files.

  • Provide various universities (upon request) with conduct information regarding student transfers with disciplinary records.

Office Administration and Student Staff Supervision:
  • Support the Director in providing leadership over the daily operations of the Office of Student Conduct.
  • Assist the Director in the annual assessment and evaluation of the OSC Administrative operations and procedures.
  • Assist the Director in the assessment and evaluation of the GSU Code of Student Conduct, the conduct process, educational sanctions, and outreach programs and services to guide strategic planning, program improvement and to identify emerging trends.
  • Assist in drafting and submitting departmental, divisional, and Institutional reports reflective of this work.
  • Provide direct supervision for student employees and interns.
  • Organize and monitor the progress of staff on assigned cases and projects.
  • Assist with the coordination and facilitation of trainings and professional development for Student Conduct and undergraduate and graduate student staff, interns, committee hearing officers, and college hearing officers.
Consultation and Collaboration:
  • Provide consultation services and resolution oversight to faculty and staff regarding reported incidents involving student behavior problems in GSU’s various learning environments.
Educational Sanctions and Outreach:
  • Co-create and facilitate educational outreach and training to partners across campus and the broader community in relation to the Code of Student Conduct and will help with the design of educational sanctions.
  • Support the development and leading of educational outreach programs that support the Office of Student Conduct initiatives.
Professional Development and Other Duties as Assigned by Director:
  • Attend workshops, trainings, conferences and/or participate in lectures, podcasts, book reads to keep current with best practices, competencies, and goals of the Office of Student Conduct.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in student Affairs, higher education administration, counseling, conflict resolution, or related field from an accredited institution or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities

  • Three years full-time professional work experience in investigating, adjudicating and resolving allegations of student academic and/or behavioral misconduct, and student organizational misconduct within an institution of higher education

  • Experience managing caseloads using an electronic record keeping system

  • Experience working with and supporting students in crisis

  • Experience supervising undergraduate and graduate student staff

  • Demonstrate experience collaborating with a variety of University and community constituents

  • Demonstrate commitment to diversity and social justice

  • Demonstrate advanced communication skills (written and verbal), with an ability to draft precise and concise letters and reports

  • Demonstrate the ability to analyze complex situations, exercise sound judgment, and make impartial and objective decisions

  • Demonstrate the ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine and sensitive topics
