Job Summary
The President is the leader and chief spokesperson for the organization and reports to the board of directors. The President’s responsibilities should be carried out in accordance with directions provided by the board of directors and within established guidelines so that organizational, fundraising, budgetary, community relations and volunteer objectives are achieved. The President serves as communicator, facilitator, and interactive community planner by developing, implementing and assessing Chamber programs, projects and events. The President provides strategic direction, vision and management for the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce.
Responsibilities
Operations
Manages the operation of the organization, including staff, programs, and office. Directs professional staff by delegating responsibilities, as necessary, to effectively serve the organization's members and accomplish its goals. Charged with hiring, evaluating, administering employee benefits, and handling other personnel matters.
Advocacy
Chief spokesperson for the organization. Represents the organization to the community and key stakeholders. Actively participates in legislative and regulatory advocacy work and initiatives at the local, regional, state, and national level to ensure that the needs of the members of the organization are communicated and actively pursued. Through active collaboration and participation, seeks to provide leadership and influence policy development to ultimately affect outcomes, including legislative and regulatory activity related to business and economic development issues.
Board support
Serves as the staff resource to the board of directors and committees, assisting them in matters of policy formulation and interpretation. Communicates regularly and openly with the board. Implements policies and initiatives established by the board of directors. Participates in board meetings by providing input, information, and feedback as the organization's liaison.
Financial management
Provides oversight for the financial affairs of the organization. This includes but is not limited to preparing the budget and monthly financial statements. Ensures financial policies and procedures are followed. Ensures sound fiscal operation and ongoing financial growth and viability of the organization.
Other
Implements policies and provides leadership and support for all functions and activities as determined by the board of directors.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a professional discipline relevant to providing executive leadership for an organization of this type from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in a business or nonprofit organization is preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a leadership position is preferred.

- Excellent communication and proven collaboration skills.
- Demonstrable collaborative experiences working with local, regional, business, nonprofit, and government organizations in both regular operations and project settings.
- Executive style that can generate respect and support from a wide range of constituents, including large and small business, nonprofits, community groups, elected leaders and staff at local, regional, state and national levels.
- Passion for the Grand Rapids, Itasca County and northern Minnesota area.
