Contract Position

Length of Contract: April, 2025 (date TBD) – July 11, 2025

Anticipated Contract Hours:

April Orientation (date TBD): 6 hours

May: Lesson Planning 2-6 hours per week

Dates of Camp: (Instructor must be present all of the following dates)

June 9 – 13 (7 - 9 year olds)

June 16 – 20 ( 7 - 9 year olds)

June 23 - 27 (4 – 6 year olds)

July 7 - 11 (4 - 6 year olds)

Camp Hours: 7:30 am - 1:00 pm (approximately 25 - 28 hours per week)

The Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM), located in downtown Grand Rapids, has a unique contract opportunity as a GRAM Summer Art Camp Lead Instructor. GRAM Summer Art Camps take campers beyond the Museum walls to stimulate creative expression through daily art-making activities and gallery tours with GRAM camp instructors. Campers learn collaborative problem-solving skills through hands-on art-making and enriching group communication.

The Summer Art Camp Lead Instructor will develop curriculum, instruct, and facilitate (2) one-week-long summer camp workshops and gallery tours to children ages 4 – 6 years old and (2) one-week-long summer camp workshops and gallery tours to children 7 - 9 years old.. GRAM’s Summer Art Camps will be on-site at GRAM in 2025.

Essential Responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:

In collaboration with the Studio Experience Manager, the Summer Art Camp Lead Instructor will be responsible for planning and developing program curriculums and lead 2 week-long art camps for children ages 4 – 6 and 2 week-long art camps for children 7-9 years old. Curriculum is created to related to GRAM’s permanent collections and/or special exhibitions. The Lead Instructor must be comfortable leading groups of 20 to 30 children within a Museum and Studio setting. The Lead Instructor will be responsible for the daily supervision and delegation of assistant instructors each week. The Lead Instructor will be expected to arrive at least one hour prior to the session unless otherwise discussed, set up the studio space and materials, and begin and finish teaching at the scheduled time.

Prior to camp, the Lead Instructor will co-lead training sessions, prepare and supervise the preparation of lesson plans, coordinate with Studio Manager to order supplies, and set up the studio space and materials as needed each week. During camp, the Lead Instructor will prepare daily schedules, facilitate programs, and maintain supplies. He/she will lead other instructors in providing instruction during gallery & studio times, setting up the studio space and materials, cleaning up/putting away all supplies at the end of each day.

Requirements:

· Candidates should have strong experience with classroom management for large groups of students ages 4-9.

· A bachelor’s degree in Art History, Art Education, Fine/Studio Art, or Museum Studies is preferred.

· Candidates should have strong awareness of different classroom/studio management styles, organizational and research skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, an aptitude for detail and craft, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

The Lead Instructor must be present for all camp sessions as scheduled. If the instructor falls seriously ill or has an emergency rendering him/her incapable of working, the instructor will make all attempts to notify GRAM staff at least 24 hours in advance of the session. Otherwise, the instructor will notify the Studio Experience Manager as soon as reasonably possible. The museum will arrange for all substitutes in such situations unless otherwise decided.

Additional Requirements:

Physical requirements include, but are not limited to, the ability to instruct and manage groups of children for 3-hour intervals, mobility necessary to walking, kneeling, and sitting 50% of the time. Ability to occasionally move and/or lift 10 lbs or less.
