HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
Agricultural Operations
Performs semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation and maintenance of turf farms, tree farms and appurtenances; does related work as required; work is performed under regular supervision at any of GSWSA sites.
Acts as lead operator in the work of the crew preparing fields, planting, mowing, irrigating, harvesting and delivering sod, hauling and applying sludge, maintaining grounds and right-of-ways and similar activities on a variety of farms and sites;
Acts as crew leader when required;
Cuts, stacks, loads, delivers and unloads sod, loads, hauls, unloads and spreads water and wastewater sludge from various plant sites;
Assists in the operation and maintenance of compost facility as needed;
Performs or assists in maintenance of farm equipment;
Applies storm water, effluent, compost, sludge, pesticides and fertilizer as needed;
Handles sod payments from customers and delivers to crew leader or supervisor;
Operates trucks, tractors, backhoes, track-hoes, dozers, front end loaders, dredges, farm and other mechanical equipment in connection with the above tasks;
Works weekends and evenings as required;
Assists water and wastewater crews when needed;
Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in farm operation and maintenance; knowledge of a variety of maintenance and manual tasks involved in farm operation; knowledge of the safe use of common hand and power tools; thorough knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of common farm and mechanical equipment; ability to proficiently operate sod delivery truck, tanker, construction type heavy equipment, and other farm equipment; ability to perform manual and semi-skilled labor for extended periods; ability to perform strenuous manual labor under all weather conditions in the field; ability to lift 100 pounds of force occasionally, and /or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; ability to bend, reach and stand for extended periods of time; ability to twist, sit, kneel, crawl, squat and walk; and ability to drive a vehicle daily.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a High School Diploma or GED and 2 years of experience in the operation and maintenance of a farm including experience in operating backhoes, track-hoes, dozers, loaders, large trucks, tractors, and other farm equipment.
Possession of a Class A CDL license with airbrakes endorsements and no transmission or hauling restrictions. Hazardous materials endorsement may be required. Must obtain a CDL tanker endorsement within one year of employment. May be required to obtain a private pesticide license.
Title advancements and/or promotions to various positions depend on an individual’s job performance, knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience and other special requirements. There is no guarantee of career progression to these or any other positions at the Authority.
· Senior Heavy Equipment Operator: $21.62 per hour
· Lead Heavy Equipment Operator: $23.78 per hour
THIS POSITION IS OPEN IN THE AGRICULTURAL OPERATIONS DEPARTMENT. THE PAY RANGE FOR A HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR IS $19.65 TO $29.48/HR. THIS POSITION WILL REMAIN OPEN UNTIL FILLED.
