SUMMARY

The Utility Worker will be able to perform all basic maintenance; grounds care and custodial duties as assigned and that do not require certification. This is an entry-level position into the Maintenance Department. He/She will also perform Housekeeping duties, all indoor and outdoor upkeep and general maintenance of all Housing buildings/units, grounds and parking areas. Work is usually performed as a member of a group with specific instructions being given and close supervision exercised at all times.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.

  • Must have some housekeeping experience.

  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver's License and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To be punctual when reporting for duty as scheduled by your supervisor.

  • To follow all rules, regulations, and policies of the Grand Traverse Band.

  • Must adhere to the confidentiality of the department especially involving housing tenants.

  • Performs specific grounds care tasks in accordance with established procedures. The tasks include, but are not limited to: mowing, trimming, edging, watering; sweeping walks and drives, removing snow, spreading sand and/or ice-melt, etc.

  • Operates and maintains powered grounds-care equipment such as tractor mowers, riding mowers, push mowers, trimmers, blowers, spreaders, chain saws.

  • Assist Maintenance I or II crew with general labor duties in the installations and repair of gas, sewer and water lines, the installation or repair of plumbing fixtures or other similar activities.

  • Sweeps, mops and waxes floors, cleans and paints walls and woodwork; cleans housing units including kitchen appliances.

  • Must be able to perform all duties required of Housekeepers, which will include dusting, mopping, vacuuming, and emptying of wastebaskets, for all offices, bathrooms and break room areas.

  • Must be able to change light bulbs inside and outside.

  • Will check smoke detectors and fire extinguishers routinely.

  • Under required supervision must be willing to perform basic electrical duties such as changing outlets, switches and changing ballasts.

  • Under required supervision must be willing to perform basic plumbing such as toilet repair or replacement, running water or sewer lines.

  • Basic mechanical maintenance (both residential mechanical systems and small engine) such as greasing gear, bushings and bearings, changing filters, switches and sparkplugs.

  • Will be assigned daily projects or special assignments to be performed according to priority, availability of staff and availability to equipment and supplies. All assignments or projects will have a timeline for completion.

  • Must be adept in the safe handling of all power tools.

  • Move furniture and other household items.

  • Assist with maintaining supplies and organization of supply area.

  • Other duties as assigned by your supervisor that are appropriate for the position.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • The Utility Worker must be willing to provide assistance to other maintenance staff as needed or requested.

  • Must follow OSHA rules and regulations.

  • Must be able to work independently or as part of a team.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.

  • Must have some housekeeping experience.

  • Knowledge of safety procedures and safety equipment recommended for use during the course of duty.

DRIVING REQUIREMENTS

Must have a valid, unrestricted driver's license and be insurable by GTB's insurance carrier.

SUPERVISORY DUTIES

None

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED

  • Floor care products and floor care equipment, shop vacuums, window cleaning equipment, and painting equipment.

  • Shovels and gardening tools, pruning tools, weed whackers, lawn movers and commercial lawn mowers.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Balance, dexterity and motor skills are essential to this position

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Climb ladders

  • Shovel and remove show

  • Must be agile and flexible enough to work in a confined area or space

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to perform routine or preventive maintenance duties in all seasons of the year indoors or outdoors.

  • Must be able to move from location to location as work assignments may be changed or prioritized by supervisor.

COMMENTS

Native American Preference will apply. Must be willing and able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Adherence to strict company policy in regard to confidentiality is a must.
