What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maker- Custom Marine Canvas position at Grand Traverse Canvas Works?
Our ideal candidate is a hands-on creative, with a strong desire to problem solve and provide thoughtful solutions. Our product lines are highly customized which means no two days or projects are the same. An entrepreneurial-minded individual that enjoys the conceptual and physical sides of making, and satisfaction of seeing those ideas take shape in the real world will best fit in with our team.
You will be expected to bring excellent service, communication, and unique ideas to each of our projects, clients, and your team. To thrive in this role, you will need strong verbal, written, and some technical ability combined with a keen desire to learn our trade. We’ll teach you a wide variety of techniques and design approaches that will take years to fully master but open an incredible world of possibilities in the industrial and outdoor textiles world. As our community grows the need to bring those advances and solutions to our neighbors will only increase and we want to work towards that future with you.
You will help design, pattern, cut, and install a wide variety of custom marine, outdoor, and industrial canvas/fabric products. Experience with drafting, architecture, design, hands-on-fabrication, or project management is a plus if you have it. We will ask you about your creative hobbies! Good math skills, understanding of simple geometry and measuring, attention to detail, and creativity are incredibly important. If you enjoy puzzles like Sudoku and know the difference between a radius and a hypotenuse, you’ll be able to handle most of the concepts you’ll master and apply to our projects.
The work does have a unique physical component; you will need to be able to lift 25-50lbs, have good balance, work indoors and outdoors for extended periods of time, and work safely and comfortably on a ladder. You can skip the slack-line and practice your balance on ladders and boats!
