Responsibilities
The Clinical Laboratory Assistant processes patient reports to provide timely distribution of information to clinicians. The Lab Assistant also performs the registration, test ordering, and accessioning functions in an efficient, timely manner to maximize Laboratory output. The Lab Assistant may also assist in Cytology, Histology, Blood Bank, Processing and the Accession area of the Laboratory. The Clinical Laboratory Assistant must be organized, have strong communication skills and performs Phlebotomist duties.
Essential Functions :
- Performs the registration, test ordering, and accessioning functions in an efficient, timely manner to maximize Laboratory output.
- Perform all functions in the accession room area of the lab, spin and process specimens for analytical and reference testing, Clean and prep accession room for day shift check list, responsible for training of staff in accession room.
- Processes Laboratory patient reports daily to provide timely distribution of patient information to clinicians.
- Specimen Processing : centrifuging samples; add on test; labeling tubes; use correct patient identification; label samples with Laboratory labels; look up sample requirements for Laboratory and Send out testing; load the chemistry analyzer for testing.
- Receiving and Accessioning : Enter / edit requisitions; cancel test order various order sets such as Cardiac profile and Sepsis protocol; answer phones; receive samples from the pneumatic tube system; follow up on samples without orders and orders without samples.
- Phlebotomy : performs venipuncture on pediatric, adolescent adult, and geriatric patients; uses two forms of patient
- identification; maintains adequate levels of departmental supplies by stocking and notifying managers of shortages. Covers the Outpatient Center located in the hospital.
- Assist with Alliance Center and nursing homes registration. Receive samples from all Outpatient Laboratories. Labeling specimens with Laboratory labels. verify that test on labels match the order form test.
- Organizes, maintains, and updates departmental files and records in an accurate manner to provide for timely and efficient retrieval of information
- Utilizes appropriate verbal communications skills when conversing with patients and other people, both on the phone and in person, to convey a high level of personal attention and promote customer satisfaction.
- Provides general clerical support for the Laboratory staff as needed.
Schedule : Monday through Friday, 3 : 00am to 11 : 30am. Every 3rd weekend, 5 : 00am to 1 : 30pm. Every third Holiday.
Qualifications
Education and Experience :
High School Diploma / GED required and
completion of a Phlebotomy program or over 6 months to 1 year Phlebotomy experience, required-required
