What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinary Assistant position at Grandview Animal Hospital?
Veterinary Assistants aid veterinary technicians, veterinarians, and receptionists in all duties of the hospital. Veterinary assistants play an important role in the continued cleanliness of the hospital and daily care of our patients, including: walking, feeding, and recording animal weights, appetite, and other information vital to patient care and health. Veterinary assistants are also required to help veterinarians with patient restraint during examinations and treatments, in addition to other responsibilities according to individual abilities and training. Veterinary assistants also play an important role in caring for boarding patients and pets.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Previous experience of training working in a veterinary facility is preferred, but not required.
- Must be comfortable with communication, friendly, and “people oriented”.
- Basic telephone and computer skills.
- Basic math and writing skills.
- Willing to be an active team member open to learning new techniques and skills.
- Open to learning basic animal care and appropriate patient restraint.
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Education:
- High school diploma
Physical Requirements:
- Dependable attendance and timeliness.
- Able to lift up to 30lbs unassisted.
- Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, and reach throughout the duration of shift.
- Visual acuity sufficient to maintain records, recognize people and patients, as well as understand written records.
- Ability to speak and hear sufficiently to understand and give information over the phone and in-person.
Specific Job Duties
- Care for boarding and hospitalized animals, including: cage cleaning, walking, feeding, observation for signs of illness, laundry, bathing, and administering medications as prescribed by veterinarians.
- Receive animals to be admitted for hospital care or boarding, as directed by veterinarians and technicians. Ensure that each animal has proper identification, medical records or boarding records, and owner contact information.
- General cleaning of public and employee areas of the hospital, walking areas, and maintaining clean patient laundry supplies for hospital and boarding use.
- Patient restraint for examinations and/or treatments.
- Maintain a professional, friendly, and helpful attitude when interacting with pet owners on the phone and in-person.
- Stock hospital supplies and ensure examination rooms are appropriately stocked.
- Assist receptionists as needed to carry food or supplies to clients and retrieving samples/ supplies from clients.
