What are the responsibilities and job description for the Construction Risk Manager position at Granger Construction?
Are you ready to lead a critical function that will directly impact Granger's future? If you thrive on problem-solving, balancing risk with opportunity, and working alongside business leaders to protect and strengthen operations, we want to hear from you.
This is a unique opportunity to build and lead the risk management function at a growing, forward-thinking construction company. Previously managed by company leaders juggling multiple responsibilities, we're now looking for a dedicated expert to shape and elevate how we approach risk.
Get to Know Granger
Structures don't stand the test of time without a strong foundation- neither do great companies. Since 1959, Granger Construction has been built on trust, relationships, and a commitment to Advancing the Art of Building. Our projects go beyond concrete and steel; they represent collaboration, innovation, and integrity. As we continue expanding in the Ohio and Midwest markets, we're looking for a strategic risk leader to help shape the future of risk management at Granger.
Why This Role?
- Make an Impact: Establish a risk management function that aligns with our business strategy, protects our projects, and strengthens our operations.
- Work Alongside Leaders: Be a trusted partner to the CFO, EVP of Business Development, and Operations teams, ensuring risk is managed proactively- not just when issues arise.
- Lead with Autonomy: We trust our experts. You'll have the space and authority to create, refine, and execute a strategy that works.
- Competitive Benefits: From platinum-level healthcare to an industry-leading 401(k) match, we invest in your success today and tomorrow.
A Day in the Life of a Construction Risk Manager
- Your expertise will touch every corner of our business. Here's how you'll contribute:
- Develop and implement a risk management strategy that aligns with our business goals, ensuring a proactive, forward-thinking approach.
- Be the key point of contact for all risk-related things- serving as the primary liaison between Granger, our surety, insurance agents, carriers, and legal partners.
- Lead contract reviews and risk assessments for owner and subcontractor agreements, helping to shape negotiation strategies that balance opportunity and protection.
- Partner with business leaders to shape risk-conscious strategies, collaborating with the CFO on insurance program management and the EVP of Business Development on risk assessment for new projects.
- Manage subcontractor risk, evaluating default risks, reviewing insurance certificates, and ensuring subcontractors meet our standards.
- Step in when challenges arise, serving as an internal case manager when potential disputes, claims, or risk issues emerge- keeping projects on track and reducing the need for outside legal involvement.
- Bring risk awareness to the field, working closely with Operations teams to help identify, understand, and mitigate construction-specific risks before they escalate.
- Analyze trends and report key insights, providing leadership with actionable data that helps us stay ahead of industry risks and opportunities.
- Evaluate emerging industry trends like captives, controlled insurance programs, and alternative risk strategies to determine how they could benefit Granger.
What You Bring to the Team
- A degree in law, finance, accounting, engineering, construction management, or a related field.
- 3-5 years of experience in legal, risk management, or insurance, ideally with experience in construction.
- A proactive, solutions-driven mindset.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills to work effectively with leadership, project teams, legal professionals, and external partners.
- The ability to navigate contract negotiations with a focus on balancing business success and risk mitigation.
