Job Summary

The Meter Technician II position is responsible to maintain residential and commercial water meters, valves and related infrastructure with a focus on large meters. Perform duties to insure that meters, valves and related infrastructure are functioning properly. Perform duties assigned by the Office Staff, Large Meter Tech III or Division Supervisor including testing accuracy of meters, installing new meters, replacing meters, fixing yokes that hold meter in place, cleaning, maintaining, and exercising valves and other maintenance activities. Operate meter testing devices including field testing unit and indoor test bench. Set up road for traffic control when necessary upon entering vaults. Complete service and work orders as assigned. Communicate with customers and the general public on a frequent level.

Prior Work Experience: At least two years of job-related prior experience preferred.

Education and Training: High school diploma or equivalent required.

Licenses, Certifications, Etc.: Valid Utah driver's license required.

Utah Water Distribution Grade IV Certification preferred.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Common dexterity is continuously required.
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: talk and hear.
    • The employee is frequently required to: sit or perform repetitive wrist, hand and/or finger movement.
    • The employee is occasionally required to: feel attributes of objects, grasp, push, stand, walk, drive, reach with arms or hands, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.
    • The employee must lift weight or exert force as follows:
    • Regularly: Up to 10 pounds
    • Frequently: 11 to 30 pounds
    • Occasionally: 31 to 75 pounds
    • Rarely: 76 to 100 pounds

    Specific vision abilities include: Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more and 20 inches or less. Ability to adjust eye to bring an object into sharp focus.

    • Frequently required to perform duties outdoors in all types of weather including extreme heat and cold. Could also be required to enter damp vaults after safety requirements have been met.
    • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

    Overall Effort and Work Location:

    • Must be able to withstand occasional periods of moderate physical or mental activity.
    • Must be able to work a predictable and consistent schedule. Occasional, but infrequent overtime may be required. Minimal travel for training or other meetings.
    • Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditional and frequently in hazardous traffic conditions. May experience loud noises when driving or reading meters in the field.
    • Occasionally may enter vaults and be exposed to fumes or airborne particles. May be required to wear a respirator. In vaults, there are potential risk of electrical shock, toxic or caustic chemicals, vibration, wet and humid conditions, and work near moving mechanical parts.
