What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanic Specialist - Welder/Fabrication position at Granger Waste Services?
The mechanic specialist plays a key role in Granger’s exceptional customer service experience by repairing and maintaining equipment while specializing in installing camera systems, tools, safety items, etc. on new equipment and providing custom fabrication for unique applications.

- New equipment customized and released to home location in a timely manner with all required specialty items and camera systems installed and working properly
Accountabilities include the following:
- Follow all safety practice and take proactive measures to avoid unsafe outcomes
- Lead new equipment intake by accurately completing all steps of the equipment setup role in the new equipment intake process to include installing all specialty items and technology (camera systems, safety items, tools, tool holders/boxes, identifying needed PMs, etc.)
- Use technical skills to creatively provide sound solutions for Granger equipment repairs and special projects.
- Determine vehicle condition by conducting through inspections and diagnostic testing, including disassembly and reassembly of equipment when needed.
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems, lights and hydraulic components as needed.
- Examine safety devices on equipment and adjust, repair or replace as needed, reporting all non-functioning systems to supervisor for appropriate follow-up.
- Perform annual inspections and necessary reporting.
- Fabricate and/or rebuild truck components, including floor reskinning, blade rebuilds, fender rebuild, etc. as well as hard surfacing of heavy equipment.
- Examine welds for quality.
- Effectively operate band saw, cutting torches, plasma cutter and other cutting equipment and perform related tasks, such as thermal cutting and grinding on a variety of materials.
- Effectively use RTA software to access work orders, track time, enter appropriate line items for parts and perform additional work as needed, document detailed notes regarding repairs.
- Perform service calls when necessary.
- Deliver/pick up Granger equipment to/from outside vendors.
- Emergency response to major on-route incidents to assist in heavy recovery operations.
- Keep management informed of safety, operator and equipment observations and concerns.
Work Schedule:
- Monday - Friday; 4am - 2 or 3pm
Requirements:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Welding schooling education and 2 years’ experience OR 4 years’ experience in equipment fabrication OR equivalent combination of education and experience
- Proficient in MIG and SMAW type welding in various positions (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead)
- CDL B with airbrakes OR ability to obtain and a good driving record
- 2 years’ experience proficiently reading electrical schematics and blueprints
- Fork truck experience and ability to obtain a fork truck license
- Prior experience operating overhead cranes and able to obtain certification
