Job Description
Job Title: Caster Technician
Department: Casting
Reports To: Casting Shift Supervisor
Summary: Under general supervision, performs Caster Technician duties such as working around molten metal, operating a continuous caster, assisting on the other casters, maintaining good quality sheet, setting up tip assemblies, etc. Must perform specific responsibilities as dictated by supervisor. Must meet specific performance standards to complete assigned tasks.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Keep work area and machinery clean and orderly.
- Obtain production schedule.
- Set-up tip assemblies and caster for operation.
- Direct Material Handlers in replacing tip assemblies and making other adjustments necessary for start-up and during normal operations.
- Work in conjunction with furnace operator in controlling and maintaining the temperature of molten metal coming from furnaces-adjusts as needed.
- Observe sheet quality and makes necessary adjustments to casting conditions to correct defects such as grain size, sticking, holes, ripples, camber, wedge variance, specified guage, etc.
- Keep graphite sprays clean for proper operation.
- Band and/or weld coils as necessary.
- Insure proper operation and maintenance of molten metal filter boxes.
- Enter and record necessary production records and insure finished coils are properly identified.
- Make lab samples at the beginning of each coil or as directed.
- Checks temperature and observes tip oven as required.
- Use crane hoist, scales, hand tools, and other equipment as required in the performance of duties.
- Perform routine maintenance.
- Perform other duties as may be required or directed by supervision.
Performance Standards:
a). Perform assigned furnace operator duties according to Casting Department practices. Due to the wide range of responsibilities for this position, the Casting
Supervisor or Superintendent will make judgment decisions based on their knowledge of tasks needing to be performed. b). Ensure daily tasks are completed in time allotted. c). Ensure daily tasks are performed in compliance with established casting practices. d). Ensure safety rules are followed. e). Follow established departmental guidelines in relation to attendance, breaks, on call responsibilities, and company policy. f). Report machinery, safety or personnel issues to supervisor. g). Determine nature of machinery malfunction or breakdown. Advise supervisor to
arrange repairs as necessary. h). Recognize safety hazards or unsafe activities of other personnel. Report such to offending associate and supervisor for review during scheduled safety talk. i). Recognize misuse, theft or damage of company property and report such to supervisor. j). Support and participate in open communication between supervision and fellow employees. k). Secure necessary supplies to perform assigned duties.

Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language Skills:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one- on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Computer and other Skills:
Ability to acquire basic computer skills to enter and extract information from computer.
Ability to use measuring equipment such as micrometer and tape.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret graphic representations.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Working knowledge of problem solving skills and ability to apply them in a reasonable manner.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes, chlorine gases or airborne particles and high heat.
