Summary
Assist clients in an SUD treatment facility with supportive peer services, including but not limited to articulating their goals, learning and practicing new skills, monitoring progress, modeling effective coping techniques, promoting problem-solving and communication skills, and advocating for other self-strategies based on the specialist’s own recovery experience. This position will specifically include supervising UA (urinalysis) testing for clients and traveling to various sites on a rotating schedule. The Peer Support Specialist will also work evenings and Saturday shifts, as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Must be a previous consumer of MH/SUD services with sufficient recovery to provide peer support to clients.
- Experience with and compassion for individuals with substance use and/or co-occurring disorders; familiarity with stages of change in substance use treatment.
- Experience working with or knowledge of issues facing clients who have been involved in the criminal justice system.
- Familiarity with Motivational Interviewing and Trauma-Informed Care techniques.
- Knowledge of and ability to facilitate referrals to relevant community agencies and support services.
- Competent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; professionalism and empathy in dealing with clients and colleagues.
- Knowledge of legal confidentiality and ethical requirements, including HIPAA and HITECH.
- Ability to travel to various sites on a rotating schedule; a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required.
- A minimum of 1 year substance-free.
- Bilingual candidate, preferred
Education/Licenses/Certifications
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Certified Peer Support Specialist (in progress or completed); must have completed at least 80 hours toward Peer Certification.
- Knowledge of 12-Step Programs or other recovery-based supports, preferred.

Responsibilities

Peer Support & Advocacy
- Establish rapport by demonstrating and maintaining clear, consistent, and appropriate professional boundaries.
- Model effective coping techniques, promote problem-solving skills, and share personal experiences of recovery when appropriate.
- Demonstrate knowledge and experience applying principles of peer support and community resources.
- Ensure client voice is included in all aspects of their treatment plan and that they receive continued support through relevant resources.
Client Interaction & Engagement
- Partner with clients to identify, articulate, and analyze progress toward their goals.
- Assist clients in crisis/emergency planning and interventions.
- Facilitate client access to appointments, resources, and services, including scheduling and transportation (as appropriate).
- Actively encourage client participation in self-help, 12-Step, or other recovery-based support systems.
Supervision of UA Testing
- Oversee and supervise UA (urinalysis) testing for clients in accordance with program and contractual requirements.
- Maintain accurate documentation and ensure confidentiality of all test results.
- Uphold professional standards and ethical boundaries when conducting UA testing.
Coordination with Treatment Team
- Maintain regular communication with the treatment team regarding client needs and treatment plans.
- Attend weekly staff meetings to collaborate on treatment progress and/or emerging issues; articulate the client’s perspective.
- Demonstrate alignment with the philosophy of Motivational Interviewing and collaborate effectively in a team setting.
Placer Site Travel & Scheduling
- Travel to various sites on a rotating schedule in support of the UA Contract.
- Be prepared to work evenings (12:00 PM – 9:00 PM) and Saturdays as assigned to ensure consistent client support.
Compliance & Reporting
- Comply with all federal, state, and agency health and safety reporting requirements.
- Adhere to HIPAA and HITECH requirements regarding client care and confidentiality.
- Actively utilize, reference, and follow agency policies, procedures, and guidelines.
