COURT REPORTER JOB DESCRIPTION
Overview: The Court Reporter will work full-time under the direct supervision of the Judge of Grant Circuit Court. The Court Reporter will share office space with the other employees of Circuit Court. The Court Reporter will be expected to work generally from Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Because hearings and trials sometimes extend beyond 4:00 p.m., the Court Reporter may need to work over. The Court Reporter would receive comp time for hours actually worked in excess of the normal schedule.
Salary: base rate of $45,669 per year, plus benefits
Requirements: A college degree is not required, although course work in paralegal studies, political science and/or social work may be helpful. Experience and knowledge of Microsoft Word is required. Ability to understand and use additional computer programs, i.e., FTR recording software, WordPerfect, InCite, Odyssey court management software, CourtCall system, etc. will also be necessary. Ability to interact with members of the public with patience and kindness is required. Ability to respectfully share workspace with other staff is required. Flexibility and team mindset is a must.
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Primary duties for the position are Court Reporter duties as outlined further below related to the court’s dissolution, probate, mental health, and miscellaneous caseload.
- Record trials & hearings using For the Record (FTR) Court Recording equipment (or other equipment in the event of change). Index & maintain recordings.
- Prepare and maintain log of all recorded hearings and trials.
- Mark & retain all Exhibits.
- Prepare transcripts and evidence for purposes of appeal or by other request, using Microsoft Word and/or Word Perfect. Transcripts (for which the Court Reporter receives additional pay) shall be completed outside normal business hours.
- Enter court minutes into the Chronological Case Summary of the Odyssey case management system. Close cases in a timely fashion.
- Prepare Orders, Decrees, correspondence and other documentation.
- Transcribe dictation of the Grant Circuit Court Judge.
- Maintain court trial/hearing calendar; prepare daily court calendar.
- Schedule appointments for Judge.
- Maintain record of and reminder system for cases awaiting ruling from the Judge.
- Pull court files for Judge’s review of proposed minutes and filings in cases.
- Assist Special, Senior and pro tem Judges with Court Reporting duties.
- Answer telephone and provide prompt, courteous assistance to callers.
- Provide prompt, courteous assistance to walk-ins.
- Assist with the other Court Reporter(s)’ duties as needed.
- Cross-train for Court Reporter duties for the criminal caseload. Assist with criminal caseload as necessary.
- Cross-train for Bailiff duties. Assist with Bailiff duties as necessary.
- Attend offsite or online training sessions as directed by the Judge to further the Court Reporter’s continuing education related to job duties.
- Any other duties as requested by the Grant Circuit Court Judge.
