TITLE: Medical Assistant
DEPARTMENT: Diabetes Education
POSITION STATUS/HOURS: Part-time .6 FTE (24 hours/week).
Current schedule is Monday/Wednesday/Friday 8am-4:30pm or 7am – 3:30pm. Schedule subject to change to meet the needs of the department.

JOB SUMMARY:
The MA will work with the Diabetes Care and Education Specialist performing clinical and clerical support duties. The MA will also assist in organizing and facilitating diabetes departmental activities in accordance with the organization polies, procedures, and protocols and with government regulations.
JOB DUTIES:
- Transcribes patient medications, medical history and other pertinent information into the electronic medical record when required.
- Prepares the electronic medical record along with paperwork needed for each individual education session for the diabetes educator.
- Gathers applicable educational materials for diabetes educator based on noted educational topics in referral, information in patient electronic medical record and if any diabetes/nutrition education had been provided in the past.
- Assists in scheduling initial assessments, follow-up visits and/or annual patient appointments as needed.
- Obtains patient blood pressure and weight.
- Assists with downloading data from glucometers, continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) and insulin pumps, as well as teaching and troubleshooting basic diabetes information.
- Manages glucometer and continuous glucose monitor samples, including professional CGMs–checking expiration dates and ensuring adequate supplies are available.
- Develops and maintains department forms, records, and paperwork, including quality data.
- Orders and maintains diabetes department supplies and medical equipment.
- Organizes and maintains patient educational materials.
- Office skills: answer phone, take/return accurate messages; verify prescriptions at pharmacies and clinics, contact durable medical equipment companies to confirm status of continuous glucose monitoring supplies, and obtain any needed prior-authorization from insurance companies for continuous glucose monitoring systems, insulin pumps and/or related supplies.
- Uses basic communication skills to enhance each individual patient’s expression of needs.
- Organizes, within the specified work period, those delegated aspects of care for which he/she is accountable.
- Ensures patient satisfaction by providing kind, attentive and conscientious care.
- Assists with other duties as time permits, within scope of practice.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program
- Experience with electronic medical records experience required
- Certification by American Association of Medical Assistants as a CMA preferred.
- Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
- Ability to multi-task and problem solve. Strong analytical and interpersonal skills required.
