TITLE: Medical Lab Technician – Night Weekender
DEPARTMENT: Laboratory
POSITION STATUS/HOURS: Full-time .9 FTE (36 hours per week) night weekend position every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night with six 12-hour shifts of allowed PTO per calendar year (72 hours). May trade an additional six 12-hour shifts per year. Shifts are 6:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m. Night shift premium is $3.00/hour.

The Laboratory Technologist is responsible for the management of the laboratory functions which include the general procurement and dispatch of specimens, quality control procedures, and fiscal management. The Laboratory Technologist identifies, prepares, and instructs patients prior to, during, and after collecting specimens. The Laboratory Technologist performs phlebotomy collections using patient age-specific assessments. The Laboratory Technologist has skills in the areas of body fluid analysis, hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, microbiology, serology, and coagulation. The Laboratory Technologist manages the blood bank, performs miscellaneous functions, and complies with health and safety policies. The Laboratory Technologist communicates with the patient, family, registered nurse, and other members of the healthcare team. Department is currently staffed 24/7/365. Call coverage is limited to unexpected changes in schedule. Call response time is 30 minutes.
Duties Include (not an exhaustive list):
- Perform phlebotomy and/or specimen collection – such as: capillary collection; arterial puncture; and aseptic blood culture collection
- Manage laboratory testing - executes quality control procedures. Also performs the following: hematology testing; blood chemistry testing; blood gas analysis; urinalysis; analysis of body fluids; blood bank services; coagulation testing; microbiology testing; serology testing and miscellaneous laboratory testing
- Demonstrate organizational skills - prioritize patient care responsibilities; gives rationale for clinical decisions
- Demonstrate communication responsibilities – communicate patient information to physician, nurse, or other health care professionals.
- Demonstrate ability to adapt to emergency situations
- Compliance with health and safety standards and guidelines
Qualifications:
Must currently be certified or certified within one year of employment as a medical lab technician, medical technologist or equivalents. ASCP certification preferred. Previous experience is preferred.
