General Summary of Primary Functions
Performs a variety of patient care activities to assist the provider and/or Nurse or Primary Medical Assistant. Medical Assistant duties vary with the provider and the area of work and may often overlap those of the receptionist and primary nursing or assistant staff. MA’s receive patients, take vital signs, distribute shared decision making tools, assist with exams and procedures and update medical records. They may order lab tests, order and maintain supplies, and a variety of location specific duties.
Essential Job Functions
Maintains strictest confidentiality of patient and business information. Adheres to all HIPAA Privacy and Security requirements and regulations. Complies with the Clinic’s Code of Conduct and professional expectations including but not limited to appearance, attendance, and dress code requirements.
Provides courteous, professional, accurate, and efficient support to all patients, providers, and employees.
Knowledge of Work
- Phone calls–obtain and document patient symptoms/problems with timely and proper communication to provider; schedule an appointment as appropriate; answer patient questions after communication with provider; provide timely and courteous return calls if warranted.
- Scheduling – coordinate appointments to facilitate time for proper care and procedure. Work around possible changes based on emergencies.
- Preparation of patient for exam – room patients, take vitals, interview of patient in order to record symptoms, vital signs and medications. Obtain medical information prior to telehealth visits.
- Assist with patient flow through the Clinic.
- Prioritize duties to work to maximum efficiency.
- Clean and restock exam rooms; order supplies as needed.
- Assist with procedures - setting up necessary equipment, explaining and preparing patient, assist provider as needed. Provide appropriate paperwork such as medical release forms, non-covered service waivers, etc.
- Charting – document appropriate information clearly and accurately, including all phones calls and follow-ups.
- Diagnostic procedures – scheduling, retrieving, discussion of results with provider and patient where appropriate, arranging needed follow-up.
- Medications – refills to pharmacies as directed by provider; basic knowledge of medication used in provider’s practice.

- Works cooperatively and collaboratively with all other individuals employed by Grants Pass Clinic to fulfill the mission of providing high quality health care to patients with compassion, integrity, and professionalism.
Authority
Reports to the Patient Care Department Supervisor.
Qualification Requirements
Must be able to work cooperatively and collaboratively with staff and people of all areas and to be able to manage priorities and variable workloads.
Obtain required Medical Assistant certification within 18 months of employment and maintain certification once obtained.
Must have skills in obtaining vital signs and have basic computer knowledge.
Mental and Physical Requirements
Normal office environment where there are few, if any, adverse environmental discomforts. Must be able to lift, with assistance of other staff, up to 250 pounds as needed for patient transfer. Carrying items of average weight up to 1-25 pounds. Must be able to push or pull weight between 50-250 pounds as necessary for pushing wheelchairs. Some walking, standing, sitting, reaching, and bending. Must be able to see and hear within normal parameters. Possible exposure to blood borne pathogens. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity as required to operate a keyboard and mouse, open files, operate fax and copier, telephone, and other office equipment. Communication skills using the spoken English word. Ability to see and hear within normal parameters. Ability to cope with and manage situational as well as usual and customary inherent work environment stressors.
The job holder must demonstrate current competencies applicable to the job position.
